Survey: YouTube Is Most Popular Gaming Video Source for Teens


Gaming is already poised to be among the dominant forms of entertainment in the coming years. As VIP+ has documented previously, gaming is one of the most popular ways for younger adults to entertain themselves. New research from Precise TV/Giraffe Insights’ inaugural “Precise Advertiser Report: Teens & Youth” illustrates not only how widespread gaming is but, more important, how YouTube in particular is set to reap the rewards from this. YouTube is far and away the platform teens 13-17 prefer for viewing gaming content. https://www.youtube.com/@phorngaming may be due in part to the fact that they are already watching YouTube for other things and are staying within the interface, whereas a service like Twitch is gaming-specific. For brands looking to target gamers, YouTube therefore poses a very interesting avenue for marketing. Just one quarter of teen gamers don’t watch videos of others gaming, showing the scale of this media consumption as well as how vast YouTube’s reach is among teens. This becomes more important with what Precise uncovered in terms of ad recall: YouTube is the most dominant platform in terms of being the last place a teen consumer remembers seeing an ad for a video game, with levels almost twice that of TikTok or traditional TV. Whether this is due to the sheer volume of time spent on YouTube, smart placement of ads on the service or more gaming ads run on YouTube than other areas, this points to the potential that YouTube has on younger gamers. If it’s the source of both the majority of teen video game streams and where they remember seeing ads placed, that’s a very high level of influence to wield. Such a level of influence means social media gaming influencers could demand high levels of sponsorship from companies looking to promote their latest content. Some of the most popular YouTube channels are now featuring gaming content, such as PewDiePie, Markiplier, the Game Theorists and Jacksepticeye. Impressively, amongst teens, these are all more popular than Disney. Consider, too, just how widespread gaming is among teens, with around three out of four reporting they play at least once a week, with a majority doing so several times a week or daily. To further hit home how dominant gaming is as an entertainment format, 42% of teens currently say they game for four hours or more a day. Assuming those who lost track of time are doing so for similar amounts of time, that would put the total figure closer to half of all teens. With gaming that dominant, being the prime source of advertising is incredibly valuable. It may be an area where its influence is underplayed, but this points to another cultural aspect where YouTube can be expected to exert dominance in the near future.
