Slot Machines – Where We Were and What We Are and Where We’re going
We were there

The slot machine was invented by Charles Fey in the 1890's. He didn't even know his invention, called the "Liberty Bell" became the most popular form today of casino gambling.


But, the development of the slot had its own difficulties. A lot of Americans saw gambling as a social problem and in 1910 the entire gambling industry was outlawed. The horse racing industry was declared the sole legal activity in America.

The public's desire for gambling was similar to the desire for alcohol during prohibition. Slot machines along with alcohol were common within "Speak Easy's" throughout America in large numbers, and were controlled by Organized Crime. After prohibition ended underground casinos continued to operate.

States began cracking down on casinos that were illegal and began to confiscate gambling equipment, including the slot machines. Mayor LaGuardia, New York City described them as "mechanical pick pockets" and decimated them using a stick hammer before dumping them into Long Island Sound. (You can watch the action on YouTube.)

Where We're Going

The slot with a theme will surely continue to increase. But there is a significant section of players seeking something new. These are called the Millennials. They came into the world between the 1980's and the 1990's and grew up playing video games. Casinos took notice that this generation didn't care to sit in front of a machine that did everything for them to make a profit. They want to get involved in making it happen. This was the catalyst for the creation of Games of Skill at the 2016 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas.

Gamblit Gaming and GameCo both showcased their products at the show. They look amazing, according to all accounts. Konami as well as Scientific Games have also created their own versions to attract Gen Y players. Gen Y crowd. Soon others will follow.
