Causes of Mesothelioma Other Than Asbestos
Exposure to asbestos, an amalgamation of fibrous silicate mineral is the most frequent cause mesothelioma. Workers who breathe asbestos fibres are at risk of developing mesothelioma.
A small, but significant portion of mesothelioma is not related to asbestos. These are typically found in younger patients, or in women.
1. Viral Infections
Viruses look for a body to multiply and then enter. They are tiny bits of genetic material. Like bacteria, viruses can't survive on their own. They must find an environment to survive. Once a virus has located the host cell, it takes control of the cell's command center and copies itself. In the end, the virus infects enough cells to cause symptoms.
Asbestos exposure can cause mesothelioma when the fibers penetrate and inflame thin tissues surrounding organs. It typically develops in the lung (pleural mesothelioma) however, it can also affect other areas of the chest cavity or abdominal cavity. In rare instances asbestos fibers can penetrate the tissue of the heart (pericardium) or the testes (mesothelioma of the peritoneum).
The majority of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have had extensive, direct exposure to asbestos. This includes those working in construction, military and a range of other occupations, including shipyard workers, electricians and mechanics. It's also possible for workers to be exposed through indirect means through the clothing or equipment worn by their family members who are exposed to asbestos.
There are a variety of alternative causes of mesothelioma. These include certain viruses and genetic predisposition. However, they are not considered to be the primary causes of mesothelioma. In fact, the majority of mesotheliomas that do not have a connection with asbestos are purely spontaneous (idiopathic) tumors. Asbestos is the most frequent cause of malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma symptoms typically don't manifest for a period of 30 to 50 years after asbestos exposure. In North America, most pleural mesotheliomas and a small number of mesotheliomas in the peritoneal region are linked to asbestos. In Europe asbestos is a major contributor to mesotheliomas. It's not clear why this is.
2. Chemicals
Mesothelioma affects the thin layer of tissue that covers many internal organs, typically the lining of the lungs (pleura) and less frequently the abdomen's lining (peritoneum). Mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Although there are other possible causes, they are generally not considered to be significant causes in the development of this rare cancer.
Asbestos is a class of minerals made up of microscopic fibers. They were used extensively in construction before being banned for safety reasons in the late 1970s. The exposure to asbestos can happen through water, air or food. Those most likely to be exposed include miners, shipyard workers and other tradespeople working in the construction industry, contractors and remodelers of old buildings or businesses, and asbestos manufacturers.
Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause irritation to the linings of the lungs or abdomen (peritoneum), but less commonly. The irritation can last years and can eventually damage DNA in the cells, which then mutates to mesothelioma tumours.
Most often, mesothelioma is a result of those who have been exposed to asbestos at work. The most likely to be exposed are those who work in manufacturing and construction jobs that use asbestos, like asbestos installers or roofers. Shipyard workers, military veterans and those who work on or off naval vessels or on military bases may have also been exposed to asbestos.
The mesothelioma symptoms are not well understood and may resemble other diseases, so it is essential to consult your doctor if you experience any signs or symptoms of this rare disease. If your doctor suspects that you have mesothelioma they will refer you to a specialist to conduct further tests.
3. Genetics
The majority of the time asbestos exposure is the primary reason for mesothelioma. This usually occurs in the workplace. It has also been linked with other mineral exposures like erionite or silica. The signs of mesothelioma could appear between 20 and 60 years after the initial exposure.
When exposed to asbestos the needle-like fibers could cause irritation to the lining of the lungs (pleura). This can lead to the accumulation of fluid on the lungs, which triggers the onset of mesothelioma. The mesothelioma cells are usually malignant and can cause many symptoms like shortness of breath, chest wall pain and weight loss.
Cancers arise when a sequence of genetic changes (mutations) occur in the cell DNA which usually tells cells how to develop and behave. The cells affected by mutations begin to multiply out of control and develop into tumors. The cancerous cells that are abnormal eventually invade and destroy healthy tissues and organs. Mesothelioma is no exception.
While researchers do not know exactly what causes mesothelioma, they have a few theories. One theory is that the asbestos-related DNA mutations happen because of certain chemicals or radiations employed in the manufacture of asbestos products. Another theory suggests that asbestos-related DNA mutations result from SV40 virus that is found in bloodstreams of asbestos workers.
It's important to discuss any past asbestos exposure with mesothelioma specialists. Asbestos-related mesothelioma may exhibit symptoms similar to other conditions or diseases. This makes it difficult for general oncologists to identify this particular type of cancer. Mesothelioma specialists can perform special tests to determine the disease. For example mesothelioma specialists can utilize imaging scans to discover how the cancer has spread and what kind it is.
4. Alcohol
Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer, develops in the tissues surrounding certain organs. The most frequent type of mesothelioma affects the lining of the lung (pleura). Other types of mesothelioma may be found in the linings of the abdomen or the heart. Mesothelioma can also be found in the testicles (mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis).
People who are at greatest risk of developing mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure at work. Asbestos fibers can remain suspended for long periods of time in the air, making it easy to breathe in and consume. These fibers irritate the linings of organs and mutate their DNA which causes tumors that could be malignant (cancerous).
The symptoms of mesothelioma typically do not manifest until 20 to 60 years after the initial exposure. symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breathing are often mistaken for other conditions. General oncologists are frequently incorrectly diagnosed with mesothelioma owing to their lack of understanding of the disease and its symptoms. Patients should request the referral of mesothelioma specialists to ensure they receive the highest quality of care possible.
Asbestos is the only cause of mesothelioma that has been proven. Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral, was used in the past for insulation and fireproofing as well as other purposes. Workers in factories that employed asbestos were subjected to fibers and dust on the job. Those exposed included plumbers and electricians as well as factory employees, painters shipyard workers, construction crews and veterans.
The most common exposure to asbestos in the workplace is often when people bring asbestos fibers home from their workplace on their skin, clothing, or hair. Families of workers who were heavily exposed to asbestos are at risk of developing mesothelioma as well. Mesothelioma patients have reported that their family members have had mesothelioma-related symptoms including an overall feeling of unwellness or breath shortness as well as fluid buildup in the lungs (pleural effusion) and swelling of the scrotum.
5. Smoking
Many people who are exposed to asbestos do not develop mesothelioma which suggests that there are other causes. A person could be more prone to mesothelioma, for example when they inherit a predisposition genetic to cancer or other conditions that increase the risk of mesothelioma. Other causes of mesothelioma can be exposure to other toxic substances such as radiation and chemicals and also being exposed to viral infections. Mesothelioma can also be caused by the mutation of the gene. However it is a less common cause.
Mesothelioma symptoms can be similar to those of other disorders and diseases. This makes it difficult for doctors identify the disease. This is why mesothelioma is often incorrectly diagnosed. The only way to confirm a mesothelioma diagnosis is to perform a biopsy.
When inhaled, asbestos fibers may travel through the lungs' lining or pleura and cause irritation. This irritation can lead to the formation of cancerous cells that are abnormally located in the pleura. If the tumors continue to grow, they could grow larger and compress the lung tissue, causing discomfort and other signs like breath shortness or breathing difficulties.
If mesothelioma causes or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is important to see an expert right away. Specialists can determine if symptoms are related to mesothelioma or any other condition. They can also recommend tests to confirm the presence of cancerous cells. This includes chest X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and even blood tests. They can also refer to a specialist for mesothelioma treatments. Mesothelioma treatments that are specific to mesotheliom the chances of survival for patients. The type of mesothelioma that is diagnosed will determine the best treatment method.
