Erionite

Erionite, an igneous rock comprised of silica and aluminum, can be found in many places around the world. It can be mined and used as a raw material for a variety of industries which include glass and refractory products. Erionite is also used for processing and sale in road construction and other projects.

In the late 1970s, an increased incidence of pleural mesothelioma was observed in the villages of Cappadocia, Turkey, that were located near natural erionite deposits. This included Sarihidir, Karain and Tuzkoy. A large proportion of mesotheliomas in these towns could be due to erionite exposure.

The first North American case of erionite-related lung disease was discovered in 1981. The man was road construction worker in Utah near a zeolite mine. A lung biopsy revealed extensive fibrosis of the parenchyma and pleura, and the structure of the lung tissue was determined using energy-dispersive-X-rays that were consistent with erionite.

In vitro studies have proved that erionite is carcinogenic. It may cause mesothelioma after inhalation, or injecting intrapleurally. Erionite also caused squamous cell carcinoma in mice exposed to the mineral through their diet.

In 2008, a mesothelioma group was discovered in a small village located in a zeolite rich region of central Mexico. A mesothelioma patient from the same region was diagnosed with extensive pulmonary fibrosis and pleural plaques and an erionite lung load.

More recent studies have focused on the prevalence of erionite-related mesothelioma in southwestern North Dakota and other areas where pits of gravel extracted from erionite were used to create roads and other infrastructure. In these areas, both activity-based and ambient testing of the air was carried out to determine mesothelioma-related risks. The results indicated that erionite could be the cause for mesothelioma. It is advised that this exposure be carefully assessed prior to any proposed relocation.

Chrysotile

Chrysotile, commonly referred to as white asbestos is the most popular asbestos type used. It is a serpentine-like mineral made of magnesium and silica, using the formula 3MgO*2SiO2*2H2O. It is available in three distinct forms: clinochrysotile (also known as parachrysotile), orthochrysotile (also called orthochrysotile) and parachrysotile. The differences between the three forms are caused by the different interactions of oxygen atoms with the magnesium and silicon tetrahedra. These interactions affect the properties of the material especially its tensile force and how it reacts with water.

Chrysotile, while asbestos in all forms can be considered hazardous, has only been associated with mesothelioma or other maladies in instances where exposure was prolonged or excessive. This is partly due to the way it affects the human body. Chrysotile has less resistance to heat, and a greater affinity for fatty substances found in the bloodstream. Chrysotile has a tendency to stay in the lungs longer than other types, thereby increasing its ability to cause disease.

Chrysotile can also be contaminated by the amphibole tremolite. It is therefore harder for the body's enzymes to break down amphibole minerals like Tremolite, compared to chrysotile. Despite the fact that many organizations are fighting to keep chrysotile in use, health professionals remain convinced it poses a significant risk.


However it is vital to remember that research conducted on animals has demonstrated that even when chrysotile is exposed at low levels, it can still cause cancer and mesothelioma. This is because chrysotile can easily move through lung tissues and then be taken up by lymph nodes.

However, the mesothelioma-related cases observed in the 11,000 Quebec chrysotile mine workers studied until 1992 were mostly caused by exposure to tremolite. Further, postmortem examination of lungs of these miners showed that the cases of pleural mesothelioma were found to be concentrated in particular areas of the lungs suggesting a strong link with tremolite exposure.

To prevent mesothelioma from occurring, you must stop using asbestos in any form. It should be removed from all materials and structures previously constructed with it must be cleaned to eliminate any traces of the substance.
