How to Decorate Around a Wall Fireplace
A wall fireplace can give your living space an attractive focal point that requires attention. There are numerous models on the market however, it is important to find one that meets your needs.
The heat output, controls and the appearance are among the most important features. If you're not aware of these elements, it's best to hire an expert to help you select the best model.
Molded Squares
A dull stone fireplace surround and dull walls left this living space in need of a major fireplace overhaul. The new style is vibrant, attractive and makes this hearth the main focal point of the room. A whitewashed fireplace and contemporary artwork above modernize the facade of the fireplace while contrasting with the shelves in gray below. The fireplace's facade is accentuated by a few changes in color.
Base cap moldings and trim pieces are paired to create a simple yet effective way to frame a tile fireplace surround. Select a trim style that contrasts with or matches your other trim elements, for example, the thick casing around doors and windows, to tie the look together. If you prefer an elegant, high-end look, use fluted trim to give the illusion of a mantel. For a more rustic, farmhouse look, choose to use dentil trim instead.
wall-mounted fireplace with wainscoting are an extremely popular way to add character to a room. The same technique can also be used to frame a fireplace. Instead of using plank boards, however, try a paneled material like tongue-and-groove cedar siding or beadboard to create a striking look.
Brick is a different non-combustible option for a fireplace surround. It is available in different styles and colors. A classic brick fireplace with red accents is ideal for Craft Revival or Cottage-style homes. A rustic-looking brick can be used to complement a traditional country decor.
When you incorporate brick into your fireplace design, you'll need to ensure that your hearth is 16 to 18 inches from the firebox opening and that your surround is 8 to 12 inches in all directions. Make sure the material you choose is safe and conforms to all national and local codes.
Open shelves are a great way to store books and other items, but too many can make a mess of a fireplace. For this family room, the homeowners designed a wall-to-ceiling limestone cladding to enhance the look of the new fireplace without overpowering the open shelving.
Rustic Wood Beam
Reclaimed wood beams that have a rustic style make a great fireplace wall. They add a timeless look to any home. Reclaimed wood beams are sourced from old barns, stables and other demolished structures. Each beam has its own unique story. Reclaimed wood can be used combination with wide plank ceiling panels for a fully rustic design or as a decorative element to modern kitchens. They feature the typical markings of barn wood, like mortise and nail holes, plus natural patina that increases their durability.
Scour salvage yards for architectural salvage as well as flea markets to find reclaimed wood elements that can be used as a mantel or accent wall. For example the earthy color of pine that highlights the traditional living room mantel and surround is reminiscent of an idyllic rural setting. The knotty imperfections give it a rustic look and complement the simple lines in the beaded-board wainscoting on the fireplace's wall. A pair of sconces with a natural theme and a landscape-themed painting above the mantel add to the rustic ambiance of the room.
Repurposed wood beams can be an attractive accent to any room in your home. They can be left in their natural state or stained to complement the decor of your home, or they can be cut and distressed to create an antique look. They can also be painted to give a more contemporary appearance or covered with faux finishes, such as rust or marbled paint.
The wooden beams can serve as the central feature of any fireplace. They can be placed over a freestanding gas, electric or ventless fireplace or they can be incorporated into a stone or brick fireplace. They can be used to accent a mantel without a fire burning.
Whatever method you decide to use to mount your beams, be sure they are adequately protected from the effects of fire. Both materials can become brittle in extreme heat. However they can be strengthened with a layer fire-resistant drywall. These products are available in most home improvement stores.
White Hexagon Tile
Hexagon tile can create an impact when used as a fireplace surround. Its shape instantly brightens up the space while blending with any decor choice, from traditional to modern. Selecting matte finishes for the tiles is a great way to keep that neat and polished look, while also adding some color to make the fireplace pop.
Hex tiles can also be combined with various textures for a more personalized look. Stone-look tile is a popular option that gives the space an old-fashioned, rustic feel while blending beautifully with natural materials such as wood. Another classic option is marble-look tile that adds an elegant and luxurious appearance to the space. These tiles feature a glossy and smooth finish that reflect light beautifully and brightens the room.
The right tile pattern can elevate the overall design of the fireplace. For example, the ribbed tile on this fireplace by @lorenapulichinodesign creates an interesting visual element that pairs beautifully with the smooth, thick mantel. The patterned tile gives the appearance of a hand-crafted space, balancing the modern natural style fireplace with the overall style of the room.
If you're unsure about making a design risk in your home, the fireplace is a great place to experiment with an imposing design. It might be intimidating for other areas. This geometric tile with its black grout provides this area with an elegant yet playful feel. The hexagonal shapes are shaped like cubes to create an exciting layout. The dark brown color creates an inviting and warm aesthetic that goes well with the industrial decor.
Another method of making a statement with your fireplace is to select tile that resembles the appearance of brick or another popular material. This texture tile from LA Designer Affair has a similar appearance to brick, but is much simpler to maintain and clean.
If you're not ready take on a complete remodel of your fireplace surround, consider using a peel and stick tile to change the look without breaking the bank. A lot of these options are heat-resistant and therefore safe for the fireplace and able to be affixed to the existing stone. This peel and stick herringbone tile is a great option for adding elegance to any room. It also coordinates beautifully with traditional furniture.
Paint the Mantel
A fresh coat of paint is the ideal method to hide a brick surround on the wall of a fireplace. Paint the mantel in a different color can also add warmth and character to the room. A new color of paint can make your fireplace stand out. You can match it with the color scheme of the room or choose something striking.
If your mantel is made of wood be sure to check it for gouges, cracks, and nicks. If the dents are small enough to be able to handle, fill them with wood putty and let it set for the recommended amount of time. Before painting paint, sand the surface using 100-grit sandpaper in order to rough it up. Clean the surface with a damp cloth to get rid of any dirt or dust.
While white is a popular color for fireplaces and walls but the right color can really make your fireplace stand out. Look at the other wood trim, moldings and bookcases around your home for inspiration. Does your mantel have the same color as theirs, or is it lighter or darker? If you opt for the latter option, pick one that blends well with the other colors in the room to keep it looking balanced.
Before you begin painting, protect the surrounding area with a drop cloth or sheets. Remove the mantel, removing any decorative pieces or displays that are hanging over it. Remove any ornaments or pictures that are around or on your brick fireplace. Once the mantel is cleaned, use a damp cloth and wipe it down to get rid of any soot or dust.
Apply a basecoat of EasyCare Ultra Premium Interior Paint to your mantel with either a roller or brush. The semi-gloss finish is long-lasting and stain-resistant, which means that your mantel will stand up well to the heat from the fireplace as well as any other items placed on it. Let the primer completely dry, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, before you begin painting the main wall of the fireplace.
While the brick is a striking feature of a fireplace's wall, it can be quite heavy and dark in color. Paint the mantel in the light or neutral color to make it appear lighter and more inviting. If you opt for a light color for your mantel, pair it with a piece art in earthy tones or a large mirror to complete the appearance.
