Ten Things Your Competitors Lean You On Window Repairs
Window Repairs Can Save Homeowners Time and Money

Window repairs can help homeowners save time and money. Sometimes, replacing windows can be more cost-effective.

Cracks or holes in windows' glass are usually caused by stray baseballs and projectiles. These are usually easy fixes with the right tools.

However, if the frame of the window is getting rotten, it's best to replace the entire window.

Broken or cracked glass

A severe storm, the pebble from your lawnmower or even the vase you place down too hard could crack the glass of your windows. Fortunately just a little time and effort can keep these cracks from becoming worse and reduce the cost of replacement glass.

The first step in any repair is to take off the glass that is broken. Wearing gloves, carefully rip off any molding, trim or glazing putty that keeps the glass in place. You may need to use a utility knife to get rid of any glass pieces that have gotten stuck in the frame.

After removing the glass, clean the surface and the surrounding areas thoroughly. This will prevent the adhesive that glues the new glass from spilling out and causing damage. Also, you should ensure that the glass you're replacing is a good fit. If the new glass is larger than the previous piece, you'll have to use a circular or mitersaw to trim it.

Once your surface has been cleaned then you can apply a glass adhesive designed specifically for windows. Reinstall the glass into the window sash. Be careful not to bend or move the glass during this step because it could cause the crack to get deeper.

Then, you can apply a product such as Loctite Super Glue Glass to fill the crack and seal it. It's designed to work with all kinds of glass, including tinted windows. This kind of fix will not completely cover the crack. It's not suitable for windows that can be visible from the outside.

Another option is epoxy which is a little more time-consuming to apply but will provide the strongest seal and will likely make your cracked window glass virtually unnoticeable. You will need to thoroughly clean the glass and the surrounding area prior to applying the epoxy. You'll also need be prepared for any unexpected weather changes that could cause the crack to grow again. If you're not happy with these DIY repair techniques or if your glass is particularly large or a double-paned window is best to call in the professionals to have a professional repair.

Sashes That Willn't Open

A window that does not stay up can be more than an inconvenience; it could also be a risk. Single- and double-hung windows come with balancing mechanisms that assist in stopping the sash from moving upwards and down within the jambs. However, one or several of these mechanisms may be damaged or removed. Inspect the balance and pivot bar shoe to determine if one or both have become dislodged. If they have, you'll need to replace them in order for the sash to remain stable.

The moisture inside the windows sash can trigger cycles of contraction or expansion. upvc window seal could cause the frame joints to become loose over time and stick. You might be able to repair this without dismantling the window by putting a knife around the joints of the frame and slicing them open. If the wood appears to be swelling, it's usually caused by missing flashing on the exterior of your home which allows water to soak the frame.

A snapped sash cable is another reason that can cause windows that aren't opening. It is possible to reconnect the cord using pliers and by sliding the sash into its normal position. If the cord is damaged, you'll need to replace it.

Paint can also make windows difficult to move. If you notice that the sash channel of double-hung windows is painted shut it is possible to break the bond by scoring the paint with a knife and then trying to move it. If this doesn't work then you'll need to remove the sash and then cut the gap between the sash and stop, strip of separation or jamb on both sides of the window (Photo 1).

The sash shoes used in single-hung windows are typically made from plastic or metal. They feature a U-shaped slot inside them that is locked when the shoe is in its normal place within the sash. To unlock the shoe with a screwdriver, turn the slot sideways by following the image 2. Then move the sash back forward to determine whether it is working properly.

Rotting Wood

Wood rot isn't just ugly, it can also cause serious harm to the structural integrity in the space it has infested. The fungus responsible for it feeds on moisture and turns wood beams, walls, and joists into a sloppy mucus. To stop the rot from occurring, you should ensure that your home is well maintained and the areas that are exposed to the elements are protected. However, even when you're diligent, it only takes one missed painting session, clogged gutter or a minor leak in the roof to expose window frames and porch columns as well as other parts of your house to a variety of decaying organisms that can quickly eat away at the structure and cause damage to its structural integrity.

Most wood rot is the result of excessive moisture content, and can be caused by rainwater seepage, condensation or rising dampness. This can happen if damp proofing isn't installed or is damaged or damaged, or when internal materials like plaster and drywall are impacted by leaky pipes, appliances or fixtures.

The first step to repair rot involves removing the old material. It is usually easy to do with a pry-bar, but a combination hammer/chisel might be needed for the stubbornest areas. After the rotten pieces of wood are removed, the hole must be filled in and sealed. There are a variety of wood fillers. The most suitable one will depend on the amount of work you're willing to put into it and the depth of the hole.

If the rot has gotten too far for a filler work, you'll need to replace the damaged part. You can hire a professional to do this or do it yourself. This is a more difficult task that requires the expertise of a carpenter to complete. If you're unsure of your ability to do this yourself it is recommended to contact a professional.

While repairing wood that is rotting is always an option but it's much easier (and more affordable) to prevent it from happening in the first place. The best preventative measures are sealing the cracks around windows, scraping off caulk and repainting it and installing drip edges on the roof. You should also look for signs of humidity around your windows and think about a dehumidifier to keep the humidity levels under control.

Dirty Seals

The most obvious sign of shrinking window seals is the water that drips around or beneath a window. It's easy to spot, but it's often hidden behind a wall. This can lead to soft wood, mould, and even structural damages in your RV. The best way to safeguard your windows is with regular cleaning and inspection checks. By gently pressing against the trim of the seal and visual inspection can help you identify soft spots before they cause water damage.

Fogged windows are another common sign of a failing seal. They might not be structurally damaging, or cause your electric bills to increase, but they detract from the aesthetics of your RV.

The weather is the main factor in the failure of window seals. In hot temperatures, seals expand, whereas in colder temperatures they contract. You can minimize this effect by keeping your camper away from direct sunlight and storing it under covers whenever you can. A simple car wash will help prevent the salt from causing damage to the seals of your window.

Other factors that contribute to window seal failure is scrubbing the seals with brushes or washrags that contain cleaning agents that degrade the rubber. Seals can become brittle and more susceptible to cracking. Avoid harsh cleaners and keep your window seals and sash tracks clean by using a dry toothbrush.

This is the most efficient and most affordable method to safeguard the windows of your RV. It also gives you the opportunity to assess the condition of the window seals and make repairs that can prevent costly future problems.

It's more expensive to have your window seals lubricated or replaced with 303 Protectant spray, however it's less expensive than repairing water damage that is caused by faulty sealing. If you are willing to invest a few hours of work and time, then this is a DIY project that will greatly extend the life of your RV's windows and save you money in the long term.
