The Best Coffee Machines For Home
There is no one-size-fits-all coffee machine. We've rounded up our favorite picks for your home, ranging from a super-automatic that grinds and packs your beans to semi-automatic machines that give you the best control over your espresso.
The Breville Oracle Touch strikes a perfect balance between automatizing the process and making you familiar with the art of espresso-making. It's our top pick for a machine that makes coffee.
1. Rocket Appartamento
Rocket Appartamento is a top pick for those who wish to make espresso at home, without making huge sacrifices in terms quality. This small-footprint espresso machine was created for those with limited counter space. It combines excellent build quality and a compact footprint. It comes equipped with a 1.8-liter copper heat exchange boiler as well as a commercial E61 group heads so that you can steam milk and make espresso simultaneously.
The machine also looks great and has a circular panel on the side with the steam engraved and hot water spouts. This is an upgrade to Rocket's original design that is already impressive for a small appliance. It also includes a black pressure gauge that will let you know when the boiler is ready to use.
The drip tray and the water reservoir tray are smaller on this model than others. This means that you'll have to be vigilant about emptying and refilling the machine, especially when you use it often. This is a normal trade-off for smaller footprint, however this is not a problem that is unique to this model.
You can still brew plenty of coffee using this machine, and it will easily keep up with your demands. We suggest buying a good grinder, such as the Baratza Sette Giante, to improve consistency and flavor. You can also use this machine in conjunction with the Rocket portafilter to help improve the tamping process.
As a professional espresso machine The Rocket Appartamento is capable of making great drinks, and it's easy to create the latte art. However, it's worth noting that the machine was not designed for beginners, and there is an enlightening curve for those who are upgrading from appliance-grade machines. filter coffee machine could be a little tricky to operate, and you will have to learn the ins and outs of cooling flushes.
Both the Lelit Bianca as well as the Rocket Appartamento have the option to connect to an water source, allowing you to be in a position to drink cold and purified water. The latter has smaller 2.25-liter tank that is more difficult to refill.
2. Lavazza A Modo Mio Jolie
As you would expect from a Lavazza machine, this one is made with quality in mind. It is quick to reach the brewing temperature, which allows you to prepare your first cup of coffee in less than 35 seconds. The tank can be easily refilled with ease, since the lid can be removed to create the large hole. You can fill it up with tap water if you like.
This is the smallest machine in the Lavazza A Modo Mio range and yet it packs a punch. It's priced at less than PS100 at full price - that's less than the Nespresso Essenza or similar machines from SMEG or Desea. This makes the Jolie an ideal choice for those without the budget or space to buy a traditional espresso maker, but are looking to enjoy the benefits of authentic Italian espresso.
The Jolie is easy to use and requires small counter space. Pressing one button will activate the machine. When you press it again, it will start dispensing the pod you have selected. The button is illuminated so that you can see how much you have consumed. You can also stop the process, in case you wish to drink the pod in smaller amounts.
There's no steam wand on this model, but you can use an optional milk frother (available separately) to add some creamy froth, if you'd like. The machine is quite quiet, too and can be utilized in a small area or in a kitchen with flatshare without disturbing anyone else.
They aren't inexpensive, but there's a wide variety of blends that will satisfy everyone from the mildest to the most demanding espresso drinkers. They are sold in most supermarkets, along with regular ground coffee and coffee beans and you can also buy Lavazza A Modo Mio compatible pods online.
The Jolie and Milk is a sleek capsule machine with an integrated milk warmer and a frother. It comes with a 75cm plug and power cable, a warranty document along with a quick guide and a tester pack of nine Lavazza pods. Six are roasts (two Qualita Rossa and two Lungo Dolce) and two are decaffeinated. The machine is small enough to be able to be stowed on the floor or placed under the cupboard.
3. Breville BES870XL
The Breville Barista Express appears to be a costly espresso machine. If you're willing to master it, then this is a great home espresso maker. It's more efficient than most of the more expensive models. It's among the best priced in its class, and it's especially suitable for those who don't have an espresso grinder yet--which can easily set them back another $100 or more.
The model is just in the middle of the line for Breville (their Oracle is the most expensive, costing $2,199) however, it's an excellent option for baristas at home who are on a tight budget. It comes with a variety of customizable features and even an integrated burr mill to make it more affordable. It is also a single-boiler machine, which means it can only handle one thing at a time.
Despite being a relatively newcomer to the market of espresso machines, Breville has quickly made a name for themselves by offering top-quality equipment. This machine is no different, and it offers just enough control that it can be adjusted to let baristas who are aspiring improve their skills without spending hundreds of dollars more than they should.
It's not without its quirks however. For instance, the hopper in this model is located on the side of the unit instead of being on top. This isn't really significant however it can be a little difficult to dispense multiple shots at once. It's also difficult to see how much water is left in the tank because of its position at the rear.
But if you're prepared to spend some time learning how to master the Breville Barista Express, it's an ideal, all-purpose machine for anyone who is a coffee lover at home. The only downside is the cost, which can be a nagging issue for some buyers. If you're looking for a less expensive alternative, read our review of the Gaggia Classic or the La Pavoni Impresso. Both machines are comparable in their capabilities and offer a bit more control than the Barista Express. However, they are a fraction of the cost.
4. OXO Brew 9 Cup
A high-tech smart coffee maker that produces great coffee using a simple interface. Its sleek stainless steel design and backlit LED screen add a sophisticated look to your kitchen. It comes with one dial that allows you to set the amount of cups. There are two settings available: 5-9 cups and 2-4 cups. Its brewing process is similar to pour-over that many coffee enthusiasts believe produces the most delicious coffee. The water is heated up to the perfect temperature and then evenly distributed over the coffee grounds with a shower head. The brewed coffee then collects inside the double-walled thermal carafe for upto 60 minutes. The pause-and pour feature lets you to take the carafe out while brewing and fill your cup. The machine stops brewing and shows a red light for the carafe on its LED interface until you return it. then resumes and finishes brewing.
The OXO 9-Cup coffee maker comes SCAA certified, which means that it meets the strict standards for technical quality. Its brew time is approximately the same length as the Bodum BISTRO and Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741, but it provides more control over temperature, brewing duration and quality.
In our testing we found that the OXO Brew 9-Cup made excellent drip coffee with a full cup in just 7 minutes and 41 seconds. It's slightly longer than the 6 minutes or less that the Bonavita Connoisseur and the Moccamaster require but well within the range that coffee experts suggest for a decent cup of drip.
You should also grind your own beans prior to making. You can choose a manual grinder or a more automated model like the Baratza Encore. It has various grind settings, as well as it has a hopper that can be used for whole beans.
The only downside is that the carafe and water reservoirs aren't dishwasher safe, which could be a problem for some users. The stainless steel can be cleaned by hand. The OXO Brew 9-Cup's sleek design and easy-to-use interface make it one of the top contenders among best drip coffee makers.
