Talcum Powder Causes Mesothelioma
This product may have exposed women to asbestos. Mesothelioma is typically caused by asbestos exposure over a long period of time.
People who worked in talcum powder mills, mines or factories have been reported to be at risk of developing mesothelioma. Cancers can develop over the course of years of exposure to talcum powder.
Asbestos fibers may become airborne when talcum powder has been crushed and used. These tiny fibers could be embedded into the lining of the stomach, lungs and the heart.
Asbestos
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral was used in the manufacturing of a variety of products, including talcum powder. When asbestos fibres are agitated, they become airborne and could be inhaled or ingested. The fibres then cause irritation to the lining of the organs within the body, called mesothelium. This irritation can lead to the growth of cancerous cells. Exposure to asbestos can cause peritoneal, pleural and testicular cancers.
In what is mesothelioma caused from , asbestos exposure can affect other family members. It occurs when asbestos is brought into the home of workers through their clothing, their hair or their tools. Then their family members breathe in asbestos or ingest it. The chance of developing mesothelioma is higher for family members of asbestos workers. If you have a family member who has mesothelioma, you should be screened if you have been exposed.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that can develop everywhere in the body, but it is most common in the peritoneum, tunica vulginalis and the lungs. When asbestos fibres are breathed they can move to the smallest airways of the lungs, and irritate the lung's lining known as the pleura. This irritation could lead to the growth of cancerous cells that cause mesothelioma.
It's not clear whether talcum powder causes mesothelioma, however it is well-known that asbestos and talc together could increase the risk of the disease. Numerous studies have demonstrated that talcum powder can cause mesothelioma. However some of these studies do not explain the link.
Some of these studies suggest that those who use talcum powder with asbestos in it could be more at risk for developing lung cancer than those who use talc without asbestos. Another study suggests that people who inhale talc, regardless of whether asbestos is present in it or not, may be at risk of developing different types of cancer.
Anyone diagnosed with mesothelioma must seek medical attention immediately. There are a variety of treatment options available based on the type and stage of mesothelioma. If a patient is diagnosed with pleural msothelioma their doctor may remove fluid from the lungs by performing a procedure called a Thoracentesis. This can be performed in the hospital or at home by using a chest tube.
Ovarian Cancer
Talcum powder is a crucial ingredient in many products for feminine and body hygiene. It helps absorb moisture and prevent chafing. Talc is frequently affected by asbestos, a carcinogen. When asbestos-contaminated talcum powder is applied to the genitals, it can enter the reproductive tract and travel to the ovaries, where it can cause cancerous cells. According to several studies, women who regularly use talcum powder are 30percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women who do not.
Asbestos is a hazard mineral that can form into fibers that can easily be airborne. Workers in mines that contain talc are at a high chance of breathing in the fibers. Some of these workers have developed lung cancer because of it. Some of these workers have been diagnosed with lung cancer as a result.
Certain talcum powder producers have also mined the mineral in areas where asbestos is found. Asbestos is a carcinogen that can cause mesothelioma as well as other cancers, including stomach, larynx, lung and ovarian cancer. Asbestos-contaminated talcum powder may be used on the genitals to avoid friction and provide relief from chafing and other symptoms of genital abnormalities.
Women who have inhaled asbestos-contaminated talcum powder at home or at work have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer, as well. When asbestos-contaminated talcum powder gets into the ovaries, it can cause a type of mesothelioma known as epithelial ovarian cancer.
The New York Times reported that the company responsible for making the most talcum powder in United States, Johnson & Johnson, was aware of the dangers to women who used its products to clean their feminine hygiene. The newspaper reported on internal documents that indicated that Johnson & Johnson was aware of the link between the product and ovarian cancer, however, they continued to market and sell Baby Powder without warning women of the risks. The company has denied the assertions, claiming that the talcum powder used in its products is not contaminated with asbestos, and any claims of a link between the product and cancer are based on flawed science. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the company, alleging that its talcum powder caused the development of ovarian cancer as well as other forms of cancer.
Lung Cancer
Talcum powder, also known as baby powder based on talc is a staple in the medicine cabinet. It prevents irritation, chafing, and absorbs moisture and keeps skin dry and free of itch. Unfortunately, it's also associated with a higher chance of ovarian cancer.
A recent lawsuit brought against Johnson & Johnson resulted in $72 million being awarded to the family of a woman whose death was linked to ovarian cancer due to years of use of J&J products containing talcum. However, the connection between the talcum powder and cancer of the ovary remains controversial, with mixed results from numerous studies.
In general the past, talcum powder hasn't been linked to other types of cancer, including lung cancer. However, some studies suggest that there is a connection between mining talc and lung cancers in people who mine or mill it, however, this increased cancer risk may also be due to exposure to other minerals and elements that are known to cause cancer like asbestos and radon.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) the IARC has found that some products made of talcum that contain asbestos are associated with a higher risk of mesothelioma in those who use them. While the majority of talcum powders on the market today are made of asbestos-free talc researchers continue to investigate the safety of talcum powder in relation to cancer and other health issues.
Although the talcum powder attributed to mesothelioma tends to be encountered in those who work directly with the mineral, some people can also develop this rare cancer by breathing in or swallowing asbestos particles released into the air as the mining process is taking place. Inhaling asbestos particles can cause people to be suffering from lung issues such as asbestosis which leads to severe breathing difficulties and may eventually lead to mesothelioma.
If you use talcum, or other products containing talc, make sure you buy those that are marked as free of talcum. This means that they don't contain asbestos. Workers in areas where talc mines are located should inquire with their employers if their company uses asbestos free talc. They must also report any symptoms from ingestion or inhalation to a physician. A doctor will be able to monitor the person's symptoms, and refer them to a specialist if necessary.
Mesothelioma Signs and Symptoms
While talcum isn't asbestos, certain talc-containing items have been associated with a cancerous disease known as mesothelioma. The mesothelium is the target. The mesothelium is a thin layer of cells that lines and protects organs throughout the body. Mesothelioma most commonly occurs in the lungs and chest cavity, abdominal cavity, and the pericardium a sac which surrounds the heart.
Certain people have been exposed lung cancer in some cases. Mesothelioma can also be found in the larynx (voice box) and ovaries.
Other symptoms of mesothelioma include chest pain and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include fatigue, coughing and fever. It is important to see a physician if you experience any of these symptoms. It could be caused by pneumonia, or it could indicate mesothelioma if there is a history of asbestos exposure.
Workers in mines that produce talc have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma since the mineral is often discovered in conjunction with asbestos. Many workers in the industry have been exposed to asbestos and talc. They should seek medical attention if they have any of these symptoms.
The majority of cases of talcum powder poisoning are when babies inhale dust. Parents should use talc free baby powder, and ensure that all other talc-containing powders are asbestos-free. Anyone who has inhaled talcum powder for long periods of time may also develop mesothelioma. However, more research is needed to determine the link.
Studies comparing cancer rates between groups of people who have had talcum powder exposure and groups who have not had any exposure might reveal a link between the powder and the cancer, however certain experts have questioned conclusions drawn from this type of study. They believe that people who recall the amount of talcum powder they used may remember incorrectly.
Other studies may reveal the connection between talcum powder and ovarian cancer in post-menopausal women, but further study is needed to confirm this connection. The American Cancer Society notes some studies that suggest a connection between talcum and endometrial cancer in menopausal woman. However, it is difficult to determine if these results are caused by talcum or any other substance.
