Causes of Mesothelioma Other Than Asbestos
Mesothelioma can be triggered by exposure to asbestos, a group of fibrous silicate minerals. Workers who inhale asbestos fibres can develop mesothelioma.
A small, but significant portion of mesothelioma is not related to asbestos. They typically occur in younger patients or in women.
1. Viral Infections
They search for a body to multiply and enter. They are tiny pieces of genetic material. Viruses, unlike bacteria are not able to survive on their on their own. They must find a host to survive. When a virus discovers an appropriate host it will take over the cell's command center and copies itself. Eventually there are enough cells affected that the host begins to show signs of infection.
Asbestos exposure can cause mesothelioma, when the fibers penetrate and inflame the tissue that is around organs. It is most often seen in the lung (pleural mesothelioma) but it could also affect other parts of the chest cavity or abdominal cavity. In rare instances asbestos fibers can penetrate the tissue of the heart (pericardium) or the testes (mesothelioma of the peritoneum).
The majority of patients diagnosed with mesothelioma had an extensive, direct exposure to asbestos. People in the construction industry as well as the military and other professions like mechanics, shipyard workers and electricians are all at risk. Some people are exposed to asbestos through clothing or equipment used by loved ones who work in asbestos.
There are other causes of mesothelioma like certain genetic predisposition and viruses. These are not usually considered to be the primary cause of mesothelioma. Most mesotheliomas are idiopathic (spontaneous) tumors. Asbestos is by far the most prevalent cause of mesothelioma malignancy. Mesothelioma symptoms often are not evident for 30 to 50 years after asbestos exposure. In North America, asbestos is responsible for most pleural and mesotheliomas in the peritoneal area. In Europe, asbestos is the most significant contributor to mesotheliomas. It's not clear what the reason behind this.
2. Chemicals
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the thin layer tissues that surround numerous organs. It usually affects the lung lining and abdomen. Exposure to asbestos is the main cause of mesothelioma. Other causes are possible, but they are not usually considered to be significant factors in the development of this rare cancer.
Asbestos is comprised of microscopic fibres and was extensively used in the construction industry until it was banned in the late 1970s for safety reasons. Exposure to asbestos can occur through water, air or food items. Those most likely to be exposed include miners, shipyard workers and other tradespeople employed in the building industry contractors, remodelers and contractors of older buildings or companies as well as asbestos producers.
Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause irritation to the lung linings or abdomen (peritoneum) however less often. The irritation can last for years and can eventually cause damage to DNA in cells and then transform into mesothelioma tumors.
Mesothelioma is usually diagnosed in people who have been exposed to asbestos on the job. Most likely to be exposed are those working in construction or manufacturing jobs that require asbestos, like asbestos installers or roofers. Shipyard workers and military veterans might also have been exposed asbestos due to their jobs on or off naval vessels as well as while fixing or maintaining equipment on bases of the military.
Mesothelioma is an uncommon disease that has symptoms that are not well understood. They can also be misinterpreted as other conditions. It is important to consult your doctor if any of these symptoms appear. If your doctor suspects you have mesothelioma, they'll refer you to an expert for additional tests.
3. Genetics
Most often asbestos exposure is the reason for mesothelioma. It usually happens in the workplace. It has also been associated with other mineral exposures such as erionite or silica. It can take between 20 to 60 years after initial exposure for mesothelioma symptoms to manifest.
The needle-like fibers of asbestos can cause irritation to the lining (pleura) of the lungs. This can lead to a buildup on the lungs of fluid, which leads to mesothelioma. The mesothelioma cells are usually malignant and can trigger various symptoms, including breathing problems, chest wall pain, and weight loss.
Cancer is a result of a series of genetic changes (mutations) that normally tell the cells how to behave and grow, occur in the DNA of the cell. The cancer cells mutated by mutations grow exponentially and create tumors. Ultimately, the abnormal cancer cells invade healthy tissue and organs. Mesothelioma is no exception.
Although researchers aren't sure exactly what causes mesothelioma they have a few theories. One theory suggests that asbestos-related DNA mutations are caused by specific chemicals or radiations that are used in the manufacturing of asbestos-related products. Another theory states that asbestos-related DNA mutations result from SV40 virus in the bloodstreams of asbestos workers.
It's important to discuss any history of asbestos exposure with a mesothelioma specialist. Asbestos-related mesothelioma may be characterized by symptoms similar to other diseases or conditions. This makes it difficult for oncologists in general to identify this particular type of cancer. Mesothelioma specialists are able to perform special tests to determine the disease. For example mesothelioma specialists can utilize imaging scans to determine if the cancer has spread and what kind of cancer it is.
4. Alcohol
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in the tissues that surround certain organs. The most common mesothelioma type affects the lining around the lungs (pleura). Other mesothelioma types can occur in the linings around the abdomen or the heart. The testicles may also be affected by mesothelioma (mesothelioma tunica vaginalis).
Asbestos exposure during work is the most common cause mesothelioma. Asbestos fibers can remain suspended for long periods of time in the air, making it easy to inhale and ingest. The fibers can irritate the organ's linings and alter the DNA of the organs which causes tumors that may be malignant (cancerous).
The signs of mesothelioma are usually not likely to appear until 20 to 60 years after the first exposure. Often, symptoms such a breathlessness or chest pain are misinterpreted as other ailments. General oncologists are frequently incorrectly diagnosed with mesothelioma owing to their ignorance of the disease and its symptoms. Patients should request the referral of mesothelioma specialists to ensure that they receive the best treatment possible.
mesothelioma not caused by asbestos is the only known mesothelioma causing factor. Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally that was used to create insulation, fireproofing and other purposes in the past. Workers in factories that employed asbestos were exposed to fibers and dust during their work. Electricians and plumbers were among those exposed, as well as factory workers, painters shipyard employees, construction workers and veterans.
Occupational exposure to asbestos is most often experienced when a person brings asbestos fibers home on their clothing, shoes or hair and skin from their job. The risk of mesothelioma is higher for family members of asbestos-exposed workers. Mesothelioma patients have reported that their families have reported a general feeling of unwell, or mesothelioma signs like shortness of breath, a buildup of fluid in the lungs (pleural effusion) and swelling in the scrotum (hydrocele).
5. Smoking
There are a number of people who are exposed to asbestos, but don't develop mesothelioma. This suggests that other causes could be involved. For instance, a person may be more likely to develop mesothelioma if they are genetically predisposed to cancer or a condition that increases the risk of developing mesothelioma. Other causes of mesothelioma include exposure to toxic materials like radiation and chemicals and viral infections. Mesothelioma can also be caused by a mutation in a gene. However this is a less frequent cause.
Mesothelioma symptoms are often similar to those of other diseases and disorders. This makes it difficult for doctors to diagnose the condition. Because of this, mesothelioma is often misdiagnosed. The only way to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma is to perform biopsy.
Inhaling asbestos fibers can pass through the lining of the lungs or pleura and cause irritation. This irritation could cause abnormal cancer cells to grow in the pleura. If the tumors grow they could enlarge the lung tissue and cause pain along with other signs like shortness of breathe or breathing difficulties.
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma it is important to see an expert right away. These specialists will determine if your symptoms are related to mesothelioma or other ailments. They may also suggest tests to determine the presence of cancerous cells. These include chest Xrays, CT scans or MRIs and blood tests. They can also refer to a specialist for mesothelioma treatments. Specialized mesothelioma treatment can enhance the chances of survival for patients. However, the most effective treatment strategy will be based on the type of mesothelioma.
