This is probably because men were more likely to work in jobs that required asbestos and to suffer from longer exposure. Mesothelioma is rare in children, but it is possible to develop.

Other factors that increase the risk of mesothelioma are smoking and family history. Family members of someone with mesothelioma have a slightly higher chance of developing the disease since they may have been exposed to asbestos via subsequent exposure. The signs of mesothelioma may be decades before they appear following the initial exposure to asbestos.

Another important function of macrophages is that they are antigen-presenting cells that can detect and eliminate neoplastic cell. It is vital to determine whether silica alters the ability of macrophages to perform this function by reducing their ability to present antigens and also by altering other important immune functions in the presence of a silica-induced alteration in tumor immunity.

The IARC has recognized asbestos as a substance that causes cancer for a long time, but it isn't known if silica can also have similar effects on the immune system of the host. As with a number of other factors, the kind of silica exposure as well as the timeframe of the exposure are important in determining the extent to which the immune response to neoplasia can be affected. Since some studies have shown that the amount of Tregs in a host can be affected in a way that helps to decrease the ability of killing tumors so it is reasonable to expect the antitumor immunity of silica-exposed hosts to be reduced.

Erionite

Researchers have recently discovered that fibrous zeolite called Erionite, a fibrous zeolite mineral, can also cause malignant mesothelioma. The findings were published in the July 25 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Erionite, which is an igneous rock composed of aluminum and silica, can be found in many places around the world. It is extracted to make raw materials and used in a variety of industries such as glass and refractory. Erionite can be processed and then used as an aggregate for road construction and other projects.

In the latter part of the 1970s, a significant amount of pleural mesothelioma was observed in villages in Cappadocia, Turkey, that were close to natural erionite deposits. Sarihidir and Karain were among the villages affected. The exposure to erionite is responsible for a significant percentage of mesotheliomas that have been diagnosed in these communities.

In 1981, the first instance of lung disease caused by erionite North America was reported. The patient was working as a road worker in Utah near a zeolite mine. A lung biopsy revealed extensive fibrosis in the pleura and parenchyma, and the structure of the lung tissue was determined using energy-dispersive-X-ray as being consistent with Erionite.

Laboratory studies confirmed erionite's carcinogenicity, and it caused mesothelioma to be seen in rats after being inhaled or intrapleurally injected. Erionite also caused squamous cell carcinomas in mice exposed to the mineral through their diet.

In what causes mesothelioma lung cancer , a mesothelioma-related group was discovered in a small village located in a zeolite-rich region of central Mexico. In the same region, a mesothelioma victim was diagnosed with lung fibrosis that was extensive as well as pleural plaques, and a lung load containing erionite.

Recent studies have focused on the prevalence of mesothelioma arising from erionite, particularly in the southwestern region of North Dakota. In these areas, gravel pits made of erionite were used to make roads and infrastructure. In these areas, ambient and activity-based testing of the air was performed to identify mesothelioma risk. The results indicated that erionite exposure was likely to be the cause of mesothelioma cases and it is recommended that such exposure be carefully examined prior to any proposed relocation of affected villages.

Chrysotile

Chrysotile, or commonly called white asbestos, is the most common type of asbestos used. It is a serpentine mineral made of silica and magnesium with the formula 3MgO*2SiO2*2H2O. It comes in three distinct forms: clinochrysotile (also known as parachrysotile) as well as orthochrysotile (also called orthochrysotile) and parachrysotile. The differences between these forms are due to the differences in the ways oxygen atoms interact with the magnesium and silica tetrahedra. These interactions affect the material's properties especially its tensile force and how it reacts with water.

While all forms of asbestos are considered to be hazardous, chrysotile is unique in that it has only been linked to mesothelioma and other diseases when exposure has been extended or at a high level. This is a result of the way it works on the human body. Chrysotile is less tolerant to heat, and has more affinity to fatty substances found in the bloodstream. Chrysotile has a tendency to stay in the lungs for longer than other types, increasing its ability to cause disease.

In addition, chrysotile is often found contaminated with the amphibole mineral tremolite. This makes it more difficult for the body to break down tremolite as it is to break down the chrysotile. Despite the fact that a lot of organizations are fighting to keep chrysotile on the market however, health professionals are still convinced that it is a major risk.

However, it is important to keep in mind that research on animals has shown that even if chrysotile has been exposed in a small amount it is still able to cause cancer and mesothelioma. This is because the material is able to easily penetrate the lung tissues and get taken up into lymph nodes.

Nevertheless, the mesothelioma cases seen in the 11,000 Quebec chrysotile mine workers studied from 1992 onwards were mainly due to tremolite exposure. Further an examination of the lungs after death of these miners showed that the cases of pleural mesothelioma were found to be concentrated in particular regions of the lungs, suggesting a strong link with tremolite exposure.

The only way to eliminate mesothelioma is to stop all forms of asbestos. All asbestos-containing products should be disposed of, and all buildings constructed using asbestos must be cleaned.
