How to Replace a Kia Sportage Replacement Key

The key of many Kia models comes with an electronic keyless entry system built in. The key is usually akin to a remote control and can be exchanged with a brand new one from an Kia dealer or a locksmith.

Key fobs can fail to function due to a number of reasons, including a dead battery, worn-out buttons, signal interference or water damage. Here are some tips on how you can get your Kia Sportage replacement key to function again.

How to replace the remote key or smartkey

No matter if your Kia comes with an intelligent key, remote key push-to-start keys, or regular metal non-transponder key the battery in these keys will eventually need replacing. This is especially true if the car displays a message indicating that the remote or smart key has a low battery.

Fortunately, it's an easy procedure. To replace the battery on the key fob take the mechanical key from the slit on the back of the key fob and pry open the cover. Inside the key fob, there will be tiny screws that hold the battery in its place. Take out the old battery by detaching the screw with the help of a small screwdriver. Install the new battery and then close the opening on the key fob.

Test the key fob by pressing the lock and unlock buttons. You're good to go if the doors lock and unlock as expected. You can now take advantage of your Kia's hands-free lock/unlock feature when your fingers are cold or you need to run some errands in Brandon.

Note: Some key fobs (transponder chip or smart keys) might require their programming done. This requires a specific programming machine that only the dealer or automotive locksmith has access to. Other keys (non-transponder metal keys) don't require programming. If you want to change the programming of your key, you'll need write down the key code's number on the key code tag.

How do I replace the battery?

If the Kia key fob doesn't respond when you press the lock/unlock button, it's a sign that the battery is insufficient. A low battery could cause other issues, such as the check engine light turning on or a delay in cranking the engine. Fortunately, replacing kia replacement key is a simple DIY project that requires just a few basic tools.

Make sure to shut off your vehicle and shut all doors before you begin. Locate the small plastic piece that is on the bottom of your key fob and gently jiggle it until the metal key pops out. Then, you can insert this key into the door handle of the driver to unlock your car.

To replace the battery inside the key fob remove the cover at the rear. Use a plastic pry tool to remove the latch that holds the black negative cable. Remove the old battery, and then place the new battery to ensure its "+" side is facing you, and the "-", negative side is facing the fob's electrical contacts. Avoid using excessive force when pushing the new CR2032 into position to avoid damaging or bending the metal contacts.

Once the new battery is installed and the key fob is turned on, turn it off and then turn it on in the ignition for a few times until the door locks. Then, you can test your Kia key fob to check whether it's functioning properly again.

How can you replace the smart key?

Depending on the model of your Kia Sportage, you may have the standard key fob, or a smart key. The difference is that the smart key is equipped with a small mechanical key blade in it, whereas the standard fob isn't equipped with. Both types of key fobs have a battery inside them which eventually needs to be replaced. Luckily, this is a fairly simple process that takes just two minutes.

Make sure to shut off your Kia and sit on a level and well-lit surface prior to you begin. Remember that the fob contains tiny pieces that could be thrown off when you're not careful.

The first step is to find the small release button that is located on the lower backside of your fob. It will be either an oval silver button or a rectangular slot. You can open the key fob by pressing the button.

After the key fob has been removed, you can remove the battery that was in it. The new battery is CR-2032, and can be bought on the internet or at your local auto parts shop. Once you're done you should be able to lock and unlock your car with your key fob even if the engine isn't running!

There are solutions to resolve these issues and keep your key fobs in good working order for an extended period of time.

One of the most frequent problems is a low or dead battery. This can cause the fob to stop working altogether or stop working at times. If this happens try replacing the battery with a new one.
