Renault Keys - How They Work
Renaults have a complicated system of immobilisers and keys. This can lead to replacement keys being a lengthy drawn out process. If you don't have access the vehicle and are able to bring it in to us to be able to code it using the diagnostic socket, it can be a lengthy.
Keys
The Renault Group is better known for its vans, buses and tractors, but they also make cars. renault captur key was founded in 1899. It is a huge and well-established company that offers an extensive range of automobile models. You'll require a new key if you are unable to locate or damage your keys to your car. Rather than waiting for your local main dealer to order a brand new key for you and wait even longer to have it arrive, why don't you let us handle it? We can replace your remote or smart key fast by calling KeyNOW.
We can provide the mechanical code needed to purchase a Renault Clio V spare key, Captur 2 spare key or New Zoe key from the dealer. We can also reset keys such as a Renault Kangoo, Traffic or Master key.
Renault has a long history of innovation. It was the company that utilized remote central locking on a production car. Paul Lipschultz invented this technology for Niemens the automotive manufacturer of security components. This breakthrough was a massive leap for the safety of cars.
Remotes
Despite smartphones seeming to be close to replacing them, Renault's hands-free cards are still widely used in their vehicles. In fact, they're used in two out of three vehicles Renault sells and their use rate has been rising in recent years. In this video Pascaline from the Product Division of Renault describes how these cards work.
Renaults have an immobiliser mechanism which is quite complicated. It is important to understand the basics before attempting to unlock your car without the use of a key. Certain cars come with an emergency lock attached to the door handle of the passenger, which can be used if the keys stop working or the battery runs out. This is a solution for those who don't want to hire a professional locksmith.
You'll also require access to a tool such as an apex key or a slim jim in order to remove the key fob and gain access. If you don't have these tools, you could require the screwdriver and hammer to take off the key fob.
You should be able to get into the passenger door and find a small lock inserted into the side panel of the driver next to the door handle. This is a security feature to prevent people from locking themselves inside their vehicle or accidentally stealing a neighbour's. This is a simple, but efficient security feature that will save you time and stress when you need to get into your vehicle.
Transponders
Transponders are found in many modern vehicles to guard against theft of cars. These tiny devices are affixed to the key fob. They contain chips that communicate with the car whenever it is within the range. These chips utilize a number to identify the car and key.
The chip sends an electronic signal to a pair of coils that are positioned around the ignition barrel of the vehicle. The coils are activated when you turn the key and send a pulse electromagnetic energy to the chip. The chip then responds by sending an identification code unique to the car. The unique code can be used to unlock doors and begin the car.
Similar technology was utilized in military aircraft during the World War 2 era to aid air traffic controllers in identifying them on radar. The aviation industry is still using this type of chip message.
These systems were thought to be clone proof until recently. This was due to the fact that there were only 74 Quadrillion (74,000,000,000,000,000) possible codes for each transponder. The technology behind these chips has been improved, and they no longer have duplicate-proof. This has prompted many auto locksmiths to upskill their knowledge by learning how to read and write the more advanced chips.
Immobilisers
The Renaults are a bit complex in how they function when it comes to their keys and immobilisers. There are two major systems in operation that affect the way a replacement key will be programmed to the car. The older system utilizes the "kill switch" that connects to one of the crucial car's components to enable it to disable it if the right key is not present. These are delicate devices that require a professional to determine and fix them if they fail.
The newer system is much easier to use. It utilizes rolling security codes and advanced cryptography to thwart copying of the code from the key or ECU. This is the code that will be used to replace keys that we supply.
Certain models even come with an earpiece that cannot be detected by transponder scanners and is specific to the vehicle. This is extremely effective in keeping hotwiring off and is very hard to bypass by using a standard key or a transponder emulator. We have a special product called the Renault Antenna Emulator (RAE) that can be used to circumvent this type of immobiliser in Renault Clio phase 2 models and in some Renault commercial vehicles that are equipped with ID46 transponders. It emulates the operation of a key transponder that is valid within the ring antenna. It can be used to replace lost or failed keys without removing the ECU. It has been tested by Thatcham and approved to offer additional peace of mind for customers of motor insurance.
