The Most Pervasive Problems In Fridges
How to Keep Your Fridge Running Smoothly

Refrigerators come in an array of shapes and sizes. They can be fitted into small areas, like dorm rooms.

Certain models are compatible with smart devices. They allow you to monitor your fridge from afar and help you fix any issues that might arise. You can also use voice commands to manage them.

Noise

Refrigerators produce a variety of noises when they are in operation. Some of these noises are more prominent than others. Before calling a repair company, try to determine the source of any sounds you hear.

Rattling

Fridge rattling can occur when there's no space between the fridge and the wall or cabinet, or when it's placed at an uneven angle. It's easy to solve - all you have to do is make sure there's at least a few inches of space on either side and then adjust the legs of the fridge or leveling screws to lower or raise it according to.

Hissing

When the compressor is cooling your food, it could make a hissing sound. This is a normal sound, and it's caused by the compressor's oil or the flow of refrigerant through the system. If you are concerned be aware of how often the compressor cycles. Contact a refrigerator repair service immediately when this occurs more frequently than normal.

Squeaking

Fridges can be noisy if the coils or fan are dirty. If you notice that your fridge is making squeaking sounds, clean the coils or fan with a vacuum cleaner using a brush attachment or a rag and water, or just use dish soap and water. It is essential to do this every two years, or more often in the case of a fridge that is older or used heavily.

Clicking

Frigs can also make a clicking sound, which is generally caused by ice buildup around the freezer fan. This can be resolved with a manual defrost, but is likely to occur again in the event that the issue is not addressed by a service professional.

The clicking can also occur when the fridge is turned off, so make sure to restart it if this occurs. This sound could also be caused by the ice maker if you have one, so it's important to ensure that it's turned off when you don't require an ice maker that is constantly running.

The hum of your refrigerator is normal. It may get more pronounced during certain times of the day, or after heavy stockings or intensive freezer functions. The refrigerator is working harder to keep your food cool, and therefore it has to work faster. This is not an indication of any issue.

Dust

Household dust is an excellent magnet for dirt, bacteria and other microorganisms, as well as traces of everyday household chemical exposures. The tiny particles can cause allergic reactions and inhalation and are an ideal surface for microbes, which includes those that can cause infection if they come into contact with a cut.

It's impossible to clean a fridge entirely however, regular cleaning can help reduce dust build-up and help keep the temperature consistent. A dirty refrigerator also consumes energy because it gets overheated and performs inefficiently. If subcold mini fridge suspect that your refrigerator is producing louder sounds than usual, or if it's wasting power by overworking itself It's probably time to call in the professionals.

Contrary to other airborne particles dust doesn't just drift in from outside as is often believed. It contains resuspended dirt from the home which could be contaminated by lead or other poisonous substances. It also contains mold, pollen, and car exhaust. It also has the legacy pollutants like DDT that were banned a century ago.

Certain compounds, such as flame retardants such as decabromodiphenylether, volatilize and get into the air, but the majority of chemicals in dust from homes are transferred from one object to the next like by smashing fibers and small pieces of plastic off of electronic equipment. High-molecular-weight substances, such as surfactants used in cleaners and paint strippers, also migrate directly into dust.

A dirty refrigerator can adversely affect your health, in addition to the food you eat being contaminated. It can harbor allergens such as pet dander or droppings of cockroaches that can trigger asthma attacks and allergies. It also contains bacteria spores like staphylococcus aureus, which can cause infections if they make their way into an open wound.

Researchers have discovered that a range of health conditions can be traced to dust pollution, ranging from heart disease to cancer to leukemia and inflammatory intestinal disease. Recent research revealed that dust in the homes of children suffering from leukemia had higher levels of PCBs as well as PBDEs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Condenser Coils

When refrigerators run properly, the coils that are on the back and front of the appliance are supposed to disperse the heat produced by the compressor. But when these radiator-like parts are covered with dust, pet hair, or lint, the compressor is forced to work overtime trying to cool the fridge and will eventually wear down the appliance. That's why it's so important to clean the coils regularly.

Before you begin, disconnect and turn off the power source of your refrigerator. This can lower the risk of electrocuting yourself or your family members while working on the appliance. If you're allergic to dust it is an ideal idea to wear a mask for your face. Then, you'll have to locate the coils. These are typically on the back of the fridge, or in front of the base in some units. If you're not sure where to look check the owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for more information.

Once you have found the coils, you'll have to take off the access panel if there is one. Then, alternate between vacuuming the coils with a narrow hose attachment and then brushing them with a condenser brush for cleaning the coils. Be cautious not to risk breaking or bent coils. After that, replace the kick panel or push the fridge into position and plug it back in.

If you're not confident doing this by yourself, you could always seek out an expert. It's cheaper and easier to keep up the routine of cleaning to prevent the problem.

Maintenance

Refrigerators are powerful appliances that run throughout the day to cool your food. To ensure they do their job well, they need regular maintenance. Simple preventive maintenance can keep your machines running efficiently for a long time.

Wipe down the door seals. Gaskets can get clogged with jelly and other sticky food items and allow air to escape through tiny openings. Clean them using a mixture of baking soda and warm water on a sponge or toothbrush every couple of months.

Another spot to check for problems is the fan in the back of the refrigerator. It can become noisy when it's blocked by paper, insulation and even mouse (gasp). Remove the shelves, unplug the refrigerator, and take out all removable parts. Vacuum cleaners with connections for hoses are a great option to clean the coils and the area around them. Make sure you turn the fridge off when you're finished.

It's best to check the owner's manual to find out more about where to find the coils and the fan and what sort of cleaning tools you may require. It's recommended to read through the warranty carefully to ensure you know what's covered and what isn't covered.
