Chapter 1- Lyddie is a 13 year old Girl who is the leader of her Family. Her Dad had left her to look for riches so, Lyddie lived with her Mother, her brother Charles, and her two sisters Agnes and Rachel. One day while Lyddie was making oatmeal, a bear came into their home. They climbed up the loft with Lyddie staring down the bear. While climbing up, Lyddie trips and the bear walks around the house. He tries to eat the oatmeal but the pot was so hot the bear runs away. While everyone cracks up, Lyddie's mom claims that the end of the world is coming, recalling Lyddie's aunt's words. She claims that everyone has to leave, but Lyddie and Charles stay behind claiming that their father would come back. Lyddie's mom agrees and takes Agnes and Rachel to their Uncle Judah's farm. Charles accompany them to make sure they arrive safely but comes back to help Lyddie. After they had survived one winter, Lyddie's mom sends them a message. She has signed up Lyddie to work at a tavern while Charles works at a mill.
