We do the same thing but with worlds history. we organize the details and turn them into a storyline of events. so we Suddenly, “understand” certain things, like why the Treaty of Versailles caused to the WWII or why Alan Greenspan’s relaxed monetary policy led the destruct of Lehman Brothers so We understand why the Harry Potter became masterpiece.
so these Stories are questionable phenomenas that shorten it and filter out things that don’t fits the context. but Why remains unclear. What is clear is that people first used stories to explain the world before they began to think scientifically, making mythology older than philosophy. This has led to story bias.
In the media, story bias spreads extremly fast. For instance, when a car drives over a bridge and the structure suddenly collapses, what do you read the next day? you hear about that poor driver, what he was doing or what was his biography and you hear exactly how it feels like when a bridge is collapsing. The stupid thing is that non of these news websites or social medias talk about the actuall reason, why the bridge collapsed.
so basically To understand the actuall cause of this accident, you need to have a knowledge of the bridge’s construction an ask yourself some questions: was there a kind of weak point where cars drive it shakes and then collapse , was the bridge damaged? If it was damaged, what the cause? Where are the other bridges of the same design?
so There is a problem with all these questions is that they don’t make up for a good tale even though they are correct
so these Stories are eyecatching while visible details repels us. in conclution, side issues and backstories are prioritized over relevant facts.
the author also discusses how our brains are wired to remember stories. This is illustrated by two stories from English writer E.M. Forster: “The king died, and the queen died” versus “The king died, and the queen died of grief.” Most people will remember the second story more easily because it has emotional meaning inside .
so as the result Advertisers have learned to take advantage of this tendency too. Instead of focusing on an item’s benefits, they create a story around it. you know they kinda Objectively speakinge
In conclusion, stories play an important role in how we understand and remember information but can also distort reality and affect our decision-making quality. It’s important to be aware of this tendency and critically examine the stories we tell ourselves and others.
