Why We Our Love For Saab Ignition Key Replacement (And You Should, Too!)
Saab Key Programming

Saab cars built since about 1994 feature an immobilizer mechanism made up of coded keys. A new transponder is required in order to enable the addition of an additional key, as well as special programming. This is usually done by the dealer using a special Tech2 diagnostic tool.

It can be costly. This is the reason why you should always have a spare key at hand.

Transponder key

The transponder key comes equipped with an electronic chip. It transmits a signal to the car when it is put into the ignition. The car will then check the signal to determine whether it matches the one on the key. If the signals are the same the car will be able to unlock itself and begin. This is a fantastic way to safeguard your car from theft.

Transponder keys could be an extremely popular accessory for automobiles, but they are not as secure as traditional metal keys. The metal component of the traditional key is easily cut or copied, while transponders have an electronic chip that guards it. The chip has a unique code that's programmed into a car's computer order to identify it.

When a Saab key fob is used, the car recognizes it and allows it to turn on. But, it's only able to do this if the key fob is equipped with a chip that is not modified that has been programmed to match the original. Otherwise, the car would refuse to accept the key and will not start.

It's crucial to ensure that you have an extra key for your Saab. This is particularly true if you reside in a rural area that is home to numerous car thieves. The good thing is that you can obtain a replacement key for your Saab without needing to visit a dealer and pay the expensive prices that they charge. You can have a replacement key created on the spot for less than half of the price you'd spend at an auto dealer.

Wired key

Saab cars typically come with two keys when they are new. If you only have one, it is recommended to purchase an extra key fob as quickly as you can, because if you lose it, your car will require a new CIM unit, and the locking cylinders need to be replaced. This can be costly especially if purchasing a used car.

The next step is to connect the row and column wires to the microcontroller. This is the most tedious part of the project and will require lots of soldering. There isn't a standard way to do this, but it is crucial to plan the route you'll take and solder the rows and columns. For this keyboard, there are 5 rows and 17 columns. This means there will be 22 microcontroller wires and pins to connect.

Once the rows and columns are soldered, it's the time to connect them to key switches. To do this, you need to place a diode over each pin on the key switch and solder it. This will shield the pins on the key switch from current and keep them from being shorted. A diode only allows current to flow in one direction, and it has the black band as a visual indicator that indicates the direction in which current will flow.

Sanabria states that some of the tools offered in auto parts stores, such as the Autel MaxiIM IM608PRO and the IM508 will assist shoppers or DIY customers to program replacement keys and restore the immobilizer's data. The tools connect to OBD ports and guide the user through each step which makes the process much easier than replacing the vehicle's computer.

Jump starting the battery

A lot of people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunk for emergencies however, jumping a battery in newer vehicles may not be the best option. These cars have a variety of digital and electronic devices that communicate with one another. A voltage surge while the battery is connected to another could cause damage to the components and render your vehicle unable to drive.

Connect the cables to the vehicle that is operating. Let it run for two minutes. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the battery that is good (it will have "POS" or "+" on it). Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted, clean metal surface under the disabled car's hood. The engine block is a good choice. The black cable is not to be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could result in sparks that could ignite the gasoline in the engine compartment.

Once the cables are connected the vehicle that has been disabled and let it run for about five minutes before disconnecting the cables in reverse order. The battery in your Saab 9-3 will recharge while you drive. It may take a while it to return to its original state. You should consider purchasing a second key fob, as soon as possible. Replacing the only one that works requires the installation and programming of a new computer chip.

Replacement case

Saab owners usually only have one car key, and if that is lost, they'll be charged. It's expensive to add an additional key and it requires replacing the CIM or TWICE in the case of older models. In saab 900 key of theft, or any other catastrophe it is advisable to have a spare key. Even if the key is "new", it will not work.

The dealer will charge you top dollar for only one working key. We can reset and reprogram the EEEPROM of your computer to be able to accept a new key without having to replace the entire system. This can save you a lot of money. It's also a lot cheaper than waiting until you lose your only key.
