A diode only allows current to flow in one direction, and it has the black band as a visual indicator that indicates the direction in which current will flow.

Jump starting the battery

A lot of people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunk for emergencies however, jumping a battery in newer vehicles may not be the best option. These cars have a variety of digital and electronic devices that communicate with one another. A voltage surge while the battery is connected to another could cause damage to the components and render your vehicle unable to drive.

Connect the cables to the vehicle that is operating. Let it run for two minutes. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the battery that is good (it will have "POS" or "+" on it).
