Man Down Devices are a special type of safety technology designed for lone workers. They can detect when a worker has fallen or is incapacitated.
They also allow the lone worker to cancel the alert within 10 seconds before it is sent. This is a vital feature for many at-risk industries, such as Construction, Manufacturing, and Transportation and Storage.
Detection
Many lone workers work in potentially hazardous environments such as client’s homes or construction zones, where they can encounter falls. Falls from height remain the biggest cause of workplace fatalities. While training can be provided to help prevent these types of accidents, it is not always possible for lone workers to avoid the risk. Man Down devices offer a reliable way for employees to be alerted if they fall, even if they are unconscious or unable to respond to the alarm themselves.
Using motion sensors or a wearable device such as a smartphone, these systems can monitor movement and the lack of it. If no motion is detected for a set time period (usually between 3 minutes and 1 hour) the device will send a Man Down alert to an emergency contact or incident response team. The worker can also manually cancel the alarm if they are safe and well.
This type of technology is particularly useful for lone workers who face the highest levels of risk. This includes workers who regularly work at height (e.g. builders, surveyors, window cleaners or roofers) as well as those who carry out socially-facing roles in public spaces or community organisations. These workers may be exposed to physical violence, harassment or other forms of distress that require immediate help. A Man Down alarm system will be able to relay this information to the right people within seconds and dramatically shorten the time between an incident occurring and the delivery of help.
Alerts
Lone workers often work in environments that are high risk, such as construction, cleaning, maintenance, security and many other industrial workplaces where lone workers can be exposed to environmental risks such as falls, slips, trips, violence, exposure to dangerous vapours and electric shock. In the event of a critical incident occurring, it can be difficult for a lone worker to call the emergency services, they have to hope that someone will notice them missing or happen upon them.
The solution to this is a Man Down Alarm device that can automatically alert a team to the worker’s location. This can be done by a digital alert sent to a trusted contact or directly to an Alarm Receiving Centre (or ARC). This is usually a dedicated 24/7 emergency response service and is staffed by professionals who will be able to assess the situation, send help if needed and report back to the user’s contacts and/or employers.
Typically, a Man Down Alarm will trigger if it detects a lack of movement or a fall. It can also include a motion sensor that will send an alarm to safety monitors if it is shaken. This is a useful feature for situations that require immediate assistance, such as violence/harassment or a medical emergency. It can also reduce the time that it takes for a professional to establish what is happening and begin responding.
Countdown timer
The countdown timer is a simple tool that can be used in many different applications. lone worker safety devices For example, it can help you calculate the duration between two dates. It also allows you to set a reminder for tasks that require regular maintenance, such as the replacement of filter elements with limited lifespans or regular activities such as exercise.
Lone Worker Man Down Devices
The safety of employees at work is one of the most important responsibilities of an employer and a man down alarm system can be an excellent way to keep people safe while on the job. However, it is important to remember that these systems can only be effective if they are activated quickly. The best way to do this is to ensure that the lone worker’s location is known so that help can be sent quickly.
Lone workers face a number of risks, from falls to being trapped at work. These dangers can result in serious injury or even death, but a man down alarm system can provide peace of mind that your employees are protected.
When an employee is incapacitated, a Man Down alert is automatically sent to the Bodytrak Dashboard and via SMS and email to notify supervisors that rapid assistance is required. If the lone worker has no movement for an extended period of time, they can also manually trigger a SOS alert to request assistance/attention by pressing the button on their CommPack.
Communication
Lone workers who need to work above ground level – such as emergency firefighters or even some painters/decorators who may use ladders - are often at risk of falling from height. This could result in serious injuries that need immediate medical attention. Knowing when a fall has occurred, and sending immediate assistance can make the difference between a minor or life changing injury.
For workers who aren’t able to call for help on their own – such as a pinned or unconscious worker – a Man Down alarm can make all the difference. By monitoring an employee’s activity and detecting any falls or lack of movement, an alert can be sent to the device user’s supervisor immediately. This can then be followed up with a welfare check to verify the employee is okay.
The Bodytrak device is designed to work in these conditions by utilising a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, with machine-learning algorithms used to interrogate the data and identify activity. A large SOS button on the device is activated by a single press and can be configured to trigger by an angle or motion (or both) with audible or vibration feedback to prevent false activations.
Once an alert is triggered the device will send the alert to the lone worker’s employer and will also display their live location on a map in their StaySafe app or web based control software. If they choose to subscribe to Safepoint’s 24/7 emergency response service the alert can be sent directly to this team for immediate assistance.
