At Boston Ballet, the iconic Sleeping Beauty scene is a part of Act II, which captivates viewers with the enchanting splendor of woodland nymphs flying around the princess Aurora in a sparkling mirage. This breathtaking scene is made by a lot hard work in the background. Liza Dezmelyk Becky Thorogood Nellie Kurz are Costume Shop staff.
Shane Maxwell is our dye specialist, and he's an expert at color matching. He uses test swatches of the original costumes and mixes dyes so that they replicate the original colors. This is a tedious procedure that relies heavily on trial-and-error. "Every fabric takes color differently and it's essential to be able to match the colors correctly," says Maxwell. The new skirts and bodices are then match-made based on the dancing style of the dancers.
The end result is a beautiful, durable, stage-ready costume that looks like it's stepped out of the fantasy world of the Disney film Sleeping Beauty. From start to finish the talented Costume Shop staff makes every step of the process a success and that's the reason we are so happy with the work we've done!
