Nine albums into and they're still pounding, Virginia metal slashers Lamb Of God have nothing left to show. Lamb Of God are a staple of festivals and a cult. Even the exile of drummer Chris Adler didn't do much to alter their status as NWOAHM King of the Hill.
The band may have evolved in the years since their controversial debut (the band changed their name to Burn the Priest after venues have banned them due to being too satanic) they're still rooted in an unflinching love of brutal force. Omens' latest album is no any different, and it's just as enjoyable and head banging as anything they've ever released.
Randy Blythe's rants about America's current state are just as sharp as they've been for years and the album is as a passionate call to arms. The album is quite friendly, despite its politically savage rants and rage. On songs like Ditch and Grayscale The group's pileriving grooves are as inseparable as a dog's poop dripping in the back yard and tracks like Vanishing and Ill Designs mix one-word riffs with the band's always-smart lyrics.
Mark Morton wasn't kidding when he told Metal Hammer Omens would be more eclectic than past records. Omens is a broader affair than their last outing and it's evident that they're having fun with it. Nevermore, the opening track, is a skronky groove which would not sound like anything out of the usual in an album from Dillinger Escape Plan. Denial Mechanism and To the Grave both are hardcore blasts.
The only cold spot is in the form of a mid-album sludgefest that's a little too familiar, however even there's enough left in the tank to allow LoG to turn it around. The closing September Song is a thrilling masterpiece that combines powerful riffs, which culminate in bone-chilling songs. It's the perfect conclusion to a record as powerful and uncompromising as this. This is Lamb of God's greatest.
