Getting the Most Out of Your Dana 60
The Dana 60 is one of the most popular rear axles among street-racing enthusiasts. Its 9.75" ring gear can be upgraded to any pinion and gear ratio in the 3.54:1 to 7.17:1 range, and a wide variety of lockers, spools, and limited slip differentials are available to make it even stronger. The spline pattern used for the yoke mount is the same as the Chrysler 8 3/4" axle - 10 splines in early gear sets, and 29 splines later.

A Dana 60 is also very adaptable, as it can be easily converted to front-wheel drive by using a Chrysler 8.75" axle housing (which is often used in muscle cars) with the addition of a shim pack. In addition, the ring gear can be upgraded to a larger size, and yokes with different spline counts are readily available.

Getting the Most Out of Your Dana 60
The only downside to the Dana 60 is its weight penalty, which can be as much as 30 lbs compared to an equivalent Ford 8.75". This can be mitigated by using lightweight spools, gun-drilled axles, and other tricks, although you will never get the difference down to ZERO.

Another common problem with the Dana 60 is that it can be difficult to tell whether it's built for a Dodge or Ford application. Fortunately, there's a simple trick to this: look at the number of bolts that hold the drum backing plate on the axle. If there are 4 bolts, it's a Dodge Dana 60; if there are 7 bolts, it's a Ford.

All Dana 60 housings, whether for Dodge, Chevy, or Ford are marked with a "Bill of Materials" and date code on the back of the passenger-side axle tube. The markings are usually very faint, so a good clean and clear view is necessary to see them.

Unlike most other rear-axle manufacturers, Dana uses a single-piece center casting to create stiffness not found in third-member type housings. This, coupled with the oversized spool and gears, makes the Dana 60 very strong and reliable for its weight. The center casting has threaded adjusters for the carrier / spool bearing and pad for a Mopar style pinion snubber, which is a necessity for high-torque applications.
