Hamster termasuk ke dalam subfamili Cricetinae. Subfamili ini terbagi ke dalam sekitar 18 spesies, yang diklasifikasikan ke dalam enam atau tujuh genus.
Karakteristik hamster:
- badan gemuk
- ekor lebih pendek daripada badan
- telinga berambut
- kaki lebar, pendek dan gemuk
- rambut tebal dan panjang (rambut hamster ini memiliki beberapa warna tergantung spesiesnya)
Hamster terbesar adalah hamster Eropa (Cricetus cricetus) panjang tubuh lebih dari 34 cm, dan ekor 6 cm. Sedangkan hamster terkecil adalah hamster kerdil padang pasir (genus Phodopus), panjang tubuhnya 5-10cm. Makanan mereka biasanya butir padi, tetapi juga termasuk buah segar, akar, bagian hijau tumbuhan, invertebrata dan beberapa binatang kecil lainnya (serangga seperti belalang). Hamster juga termasuk hewan omnivora. Cara makan hamster yaitu dengan menaruh makanan mereka dipipi karena di pipi ada kantung untuk dimasukan ke lubang makanan mereka. Hamster merupakan hewan pendiam dan nokturnal ia juga penggali yang baik. Hamster membutuhkan olahraga dan hiburan untuk kebutuhan fisik dan psikologisnya. Roda olahraga merupakan roda hamster until melatih kecepatannya.
