The thrill of Power Cosplay
Costume ideas are in the spotlight as Halloween draws nearer. For some, the thought of changing into something or someone other than themselves is more than entertaining way to fill their free time. For cosplayers, who dress in costumes to play characters from television, films, books and comics--there's no better feeling than stepping into the character of your choice. These costumers spend long hours researching and creating the most convincing and elaborate costumes. In an era where people blur the boundaries between fictional and real characters, they devote themselves to creating the most extravagant and authentic costumes. For some, dressing up in costumes every day is a way to empower themselves, tap into their own inner superhero or villain, and gain confidence.





For many of them, the joy is in the art of creating, a skill that requires a keen eye and close attention to detail. Others enjoy the excitement of the actual transformation into their character--the moment they get into a costume that carries the audience through a convention or even out on the town.





For a small, enthusiastic group of cosplayers, the excitement is in creating what is known as a " power cosplay " or a remarkably complicated and challenging costume that requires advanced sewing skills. These costumes transform people into powerful superhero or monster. They can take months to complete.





There are some themes that cosplayers are able to share. They also enjoy the sense of community and the support they receive as a part of the cosplay tribe. They are able to be part of a group of like-minded individuals across the nation, and beyond, through online forums and cosplay events and seek guidance from more experienced cosplayers.





Certain cosplayers believe that the power of cosplays are a way to raise awareness for social issues. With their striking costumes and portrayals of iconic characters, these cosplayers are able to draw the attention of audiences at conventions and increase the reach of organizations that work to increase awareness and advocacy for a variety of issues that range from mental health to climate change.
