The Handmaids Tale Costume Becomes a A symbol of Women's Occupation all over the World
The Handmaids in Margaret Atwood's novel and Hulu series are a striking image, thanks to their red robes as well as white wings. But the costume's relevance transcends its use in a fictional dystopian society The famous outfit has become a symbol of women's oppression across the globe. In an interview on NewsHour Costume designer Ane Crabtree talked about the use of colors in the show in order to distinguish women. Women in Gilead wear multicolored outfits which include blues for wives, and greens for eunuchs and women who have stopped sexual intimacy. Also, women wear white bonnets to symbolize purity and blindness, a concept intended to prevent their eyes from seeing the ghastly world they endure. Crabtree claimed that she was inspired by various groups that wear white, like the Amish or the Danish cult known as Tvind.



She says that the colors are supposed to represent the various roles played by women on the show. The red of the costumes of the Handmaids was meant to represent their wombs as well as the flow of blood during childbirth and the blue of the women's dresses is a representation of the Virgin Mary. Crabtree also draws inspiration from Western icons of religious significance, including the colors of Mary Magdalene's outfits from the Bible.


Crabtree's top aspect of the show is working with the main actors especially Moss. She spoke about a scene from season two that's still one of her all-time favorites. Offred is forced to murder her child by smashing its throat, and then breaking her stomach. As Moss and the rest of the cast gathered to watch the scene she told them that everyone broke down crying.


The Handmaids in the film, which stars Elisabeth Moss and Alexis Bledel is a story of concubines who are pushed into surrogacy to reproduce in the name of the government. Ane Crabtree Natalie Bronfman and Emmy nominee Ane Crabtree have spent many years making their uniforms. The robes, made from a luxurious fabric are both comfortable and sexually attractive.

The curators of the Smithsonian treat every costume with utmost care. The curators arranged the robes on specially-designed mannequins to reduce stress on the fabric. The front of the mannequin has been shut to prevent wrinkles from appearing in the fabric. It is stored on a cushion for the body that was made according to the dimensions of Moss to preserve its shape.
