Shadow's tale began in Sonic Heroes. Rouge finds him trapped in a Stasis Tube inside one of Eggman's bases. Shadow, who has amnesia due to his condition, joins Rouge, E-123 Omega and other robots in a quest to locate Eggman. The trio believes that Eggman is responsible for creating the Black Arms. They also become friends.

Infinite, a mercenary whom they know from the earlier raid on Eggman’s base when they destroyed his squad, attacks them again a few month later. Both battle and become rivals. Once they understand that they are fighting the same enemy, however, they decide to work together and help eachother.

In a series missions, players have the option to choose between the hero and dark routes. They can either follow the heroic path by working with GUN or Sonic, Knuckles or Eggman for their evil agendas, while the Dark route involves working with the Black Arms. Shadow has returned Westopolis to avenge Maria's death and defeat Black Doom. She also destroys the Black Comet.

shadowplush is one of the regular characters in the Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation. Along with the other members Team Dark as well as Amy Rose, his human counterpart, Shadow also appears. Koji Yusa is his voice actor. Jason Griffith provides his voice in the English-dubbed version of the same series. Shadow androids from the anime are similar in appearance to Shadow, but they all have the same name. They're silver with green, blue, pink or orange stripes and carry machine guns that look like aliens. In contrast to the real Shadow, these androids can transform into a stronger version of themselves, fly, and unleash Chaos powers by removing their rings. This form of the androids, also known as Super Shadow gives them near invulnerability. They can also fly at supersonic speeds and have enhanced control over their Chaos abilities. The androids can be enhanced by wearing a cardboard headdress and removing the weapons to make them more like Shadow. This does increase their power but reduces their stamina.
