In the short story "Identities" by W.D. Valgardson, the setting plays a crucial role in the development of the plot and the mindset of the main character. The story is set in a suburban neighborhood, which is described as "distinguished by identical houses." This uniformity offers a sense of comfort and security to its residents, including our protagonist. However, as he ventures out into a more impoverished part of town, his confidence wanes, drastically changing his behavior.

The evidence of this transition can be found in the description of the neighborhood: "In this area... an early morning sun glares with a harsh white light down an alley between fences." The harsh sunlight jumps into contrast with the serene beginning and signals that this new environment is not as welcoming as his previous one.

The change in setting prompts a shift in the protagonist's thought process. Initially feeling secure and confident in his usual environment, he loses that assurance when surrounded by different surroundings. For example, when he first notices "the vagueness from which he had always before recoiled," he suddenly feels fear, unlike his previous self-assured manner.

This change in setting also alters the way the main character acts. He becomes concerned about his appearance and how it may make him appear threatening to others: "He does not realize at first that this is because he is wearing jeans and a windbreaker rather than a suit.” His clothing once symbolized ease and familiarity; now they make him aware of his vulnerability. If the setting hadn't changed to introduce these contrasting surroundings, we would have never seen this transformation occur within him.

Finally, if the story took place entirely within his familiar suburban neighborhood, the outcome would likely be remarkably different. He would never experience these anxieties or paranoia that lead directly to the story's tragic ending. A suggestive line from the text captures this notion perfectly: "If only... he had continued to remain at home, in his dressing gown."

In summary, the setting in "Identities" plays an essential role in shaping the protagonist's thoughts and actions. The transition from a safe, familiar neighborhood to an unfamiliar, intimidating one causes significant changes in his mindset and behavior. Evidence from the text supports these observations, illustrating the importance of setting to this story's overall impact.
