Ang Kiukok (May 1, 1931 - May 9, 2005) (aged 74) a Filipino painter, of Chinese descendant, was a National Artist for Visual Arts.
Born in Davao, Davao Province who were immigrants from Xiamen, China.
His parents are Vicente Ang and Chin Lim.
Ang Kiukok was taught by a commercial artist at a young age on how to make charcoal portrait, and made movie billboards when they move to Cotabato after world war 2
What is the artist known for?
Attained prominence in 1960s with a distinct style that fused influences from cubism, surrealism, and expressionism whereas some classified it as "figurative experssionism"
The Violence of in his imagery such as fighting cocks, rabid dogs, and people enraptured by rage or bound in chains, also had painted multiple depictions of crucified Christ. when asked why "Why not? open your eyes. Look around you. So much anger, sorrow, ugliness and also madness"
Medium and Subject
Used painting as a medium with an expressive, Cubist like works, he often chose dyanmic or disturbing subject matter in an abstracted geometric style
