Ingredients

Cake:

- 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

- 1/2 cup cocoa powder

- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsweetened butter, softened

- 1 1/3 cups white sugar

- 4 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

- 1 cup milk

- 1 1/2 tablespoons milk

Decoration:

- 1/4 cup cherry jam

3 cups chocolate buttercream frosting

- 14 ounces marzipan

5 drops of red food coloring as required

1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar or as much as you need.

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch square cake pans.

In a large bowl, combine 2/3 cups flour, 1 1/2 tablespoon flour, 1/2 cup plus 3 teaspoons cocoa powder baking powder, salt and 3 tablespoons baking powder.

Use an electric mixer to mix butter and sugar together until they are light and fluffy. This should take about 4 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a time beating well between each addition. Beat in vanilla extract. Add flour mixture alternately with 1 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons milk, stirring batter gently between each addition.

Divide the batter equally between the prepared pans.

Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the pan cool for 10 minutes. To cool completely, flip it onto a wire rack for about 30 minutes.

To ensure that the cake layers are even cut the tops. Place 1 layer on the platter. Spread jam on top, then cover with second layer. Spread chocolate buttercream frosting on the top and sides of the cake. Reserve 2 tablespoons of frosting.

Take a small piece of marzipan, about the size of a golf ball. Mix in red food coloring. Knead until it is evenly distributed.

Dust a flat surface with confectioners' sugar, then roll out remaining, undyed marzipan. Cut out a 9-inch squareand carefully transfer to the top of the cake.

Roll marzipan trimmings and cut into four 9x1-1/4-inch strips. Cut 3 rectangular notches in 1 edge of each strip. Place the strips on the sides of the cake, with the notches facing down. To stick to the cake, gently press the top and strips of marzipan together.

Cut out red marzipan squares. Spread a little of the reserved frosting on the back of each square to act as glue; arrange in a random Minecraft pattern on the cake's top.

Cook's Notes:

Substitute strawberry jam for the cherry jam if desired. You can also sandwich the layers using buttercream instead of jam.

Instead of marzipan, you can use 14 pounds of store-bought white fondant icing instead. You can decorate your cake with Minecraft cake toppers that are available online or even the Creeper and LEGO(R) Steve figurines.
