Timothee Chalamet in His Willy Wonka Costume
If you’ve ever seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, then you know that Willy Wonka is not a man to be taken lightly. He is eccentric, creative, and out of this world. His factory is filled with lickable wallpaper, chocolate rivers, and geese that lay golden eggs. The costumes that he wears are equally out of this world and colorful, as well. He often wears a long purple-based coat with a yellow waistcoat and a black top hat, and he also typically carries a walking cane.

Timothee Chalamet will be stepping into the shoes of Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka in the upcoming 2023 film, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. He’s already been spotted on set wearing his Wonka costume, which cherry-picks fashion details from the franchise’s past films while adding subtle upgrades that make it fresh and 2023-approved.

In the original 1971 movie and the 2005 remake, both of which were adapted from Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, Willy Wonka invites five lucky winners of his golden ticket contest into his larger-than-life chocolate factory. They get to try candy that isn’t available in stores, and they learn valuable life lessons from the Oompa Loompas who work there.

Wilder, who passed away Sunday at age 83, infused the character with his unique artistic sensibility. He gleefully tiptoed the line between whimsy and madness, and his input extended to every detail of the production, including the costume design. willy wonka costume sent sketches that were faithful to Roald Dahl’s description of the character in the book, but Wilder thought that they were too pinned down and stereotypically 1920s-era dandyish and wanted a look that was more timeless. As the filming of Wonka continues, we’ve been treated to a few BTS photos that give us an up close and personal look at Chalamet’s dapper Wonka ensemble. His costume is both classic and swanky, and we think it will be perfect for Halloween and all of the other occasions when you want to dress up as this out-of-this-world chocolatier.

To recreate this Willy Wonka costume, you’ll need a straight fit purple-based coat with a yellow waistcoat, a black top hat, and a cane. You might want to accessorize with a brightly colored bow tie, too! You can find these items online or at any store that sells Halloween costume supplies.
