The recipient of 5 municipal bursaries, he held a BSc degree from the University of Pretoria in addition to a level in civil engineering from Wits. Wits benefactor and Emeritus Professor John Hansen (honorary DSc Medicine 1997) died on 10 April 2011, aged ninety one.
He retired in 1994 and loved mountaineering, trout fishing, golf, woodwork and painting. Her mode of work was not that of painstaking organisation-building; she was more capable as a public speaker and as somebody who could connect with individuals within the harsh conditions of life in apartheid’s townships. She attended funerals and counselled households, acts of public braveness that sustained activists. She supplied a type of intimate political management, instinctively aligning herself with individuals in misery. She matriculated in 1940 at Helpmekaar School in Johannesburg and gained a scholarship to check drugs at Wits.
