Gas Leak Detection
A gas leak is not only hazardous to people, but can also damage property and the environment. This is why it’s important to have your pipes regularly checked and repaired by a professional.
Natural gas is odorless and tasteless, but it can displace oxygen in an enclosed space and cause asphyxiation. To detect leaking gas, a chemical known as mercaptan is added to natural gas to produce a distinctive rotten egg odor. When a leak occurs, the odorant helps to alert customers to the threat so they can take action.
Federal regulations require natural gas transportation companies to conduct regular leak surveys of their piping systems and investigate reports of leaks from the public. This map displays results from those surveys and is updated each year. Because it is based on addresses, the map may not accurately reflect actual leak locations. For example, independent researchers typically find 1.5 to 3 times as many leaks as utilities report.
Gas Leak Repair
A commercial gas leak is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with quickly. Left unattended, a small leak can cause unimaginable destruction and threaten the safety of your employees or customers. This is why it’s important to contact a professional plumber as soon as you suspect a gas leak.
The first thing you should do if you suspect a gas leak is get everyone out of the building and away from any appliances or piping in the area. Don’t turn on any light switches or electrical devices, don’t use a lighter or matches, and don’t smoke or start your car. Then turn off your gas at the meter and call a plumber immediately.
Other signs of a gas leak can include the smell of sulfur or rotten eggs (natural gas has a special added odorant called mercaptan to make it detectable), hissing sounds, and dead grass near a suspected pipe or exposed line. A qualified plumber will be familiar with state and local codes and will know how to work safely around natural gas lines.
Gas Leak Replacement
Often, gas leaks occur where pipes join together – old shut off valves, tees, unions, flexible supply lines, and regulators are all common places for a leak to form. In addition, older homes with black iron piping can be particularly susceptible to corrosion and leaking if it is not adequately protected from moisture.
When a leak is detected, it’s essential that you evacuate the area and call the gas company right away. Never try to turn on any appliances or use lights, doorbells, or switches as this can cause a spark which could lead to an explosion and put your family and pets in danger.
Natural gas is odorized with the distinct rotten egg smell in order to detect leaks as quickly as possible. If you notice a strong rotten egg odor in your home, check around for the source of the leak (e.g. the gas fireplace, water heater, or even the dead grass in your yard). If you can’t find the source of the leak, call a plumber to help you locate it.
Gas Leak Testing
Small gas leaks can decrease your home’s energy efficiency and increase your utility bills. Larger leaks can also damage your property and put you and your family at risk. If you suspect a gas leak, contact us immediately!
Natural gas is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It’s added with a chemical called mercaptan to give it the rotten egg smell that can help detect the presence of a gas leak. Because combustible gas displaces oxygen in an enclosed space, a gas leak can cause asphyxiation.
Each year, Massachusetts gas distribution utilities submit annual reports detailing their service quality performance. HEET extracts and maps reported leak locations from these reports, with grades indicating whether a leak is hazardous or non-hazardous. Note that the locations of reported leaks may change over time. A red circle indicates a hazardous leak; blue represents a non-hazardous leak. A green bubble indicates that the leak was repaired; a purple bubble marks an unrepaired leak.
