Growing Plants in Minecraft
Farmland
Farmland is required for many kinds of plants. With hoes, you can create farmland by digging dirt blocks or grass. Farmland is similar to dirt, however the block isn't quite as tall.
Farmland that is left unplanted for too long, or that is taken advantage of (by players or mobs) will be reverted to dirt.
Irrigation
Farmland within 4 blocks can be watered or "hydrated" in the event that it is surrounded by water. Most crops grow better on irrigated farmland than on dry.
Lighting
Most crops need light to develop. If you plant them outside they will grow during the day, but if you add additional light , they will be growing in the evening too.
Indoors or underground the crops will only develop when you provide artificial lighting for them.
Bone Meal
Many crops can be fertilized with Bone Meal in order to grow faster. SOCIALSECURITYWASTE Bone Meal is made from bones from skeletons and can be applied to your crop by clicking.
Wheat
Wheat is likely to be the first crop you grow.
Seeds
First you will need
seeds
They can be obtained by breaking down blocks of long grass. You will also get more seeds after you harvest your wheat, so you only need a few to start with.
The first time you plant your crop
First, you need to make a hoe.
...and be sure to include water. Plant your seeds and then wait for them to grow. To ensure that your crops are growing at night, put an illuminated area near them so that they are ready to harvest earlier.
Your first wheat farm is likely to appear like this!
If you find bones, you can make Bone Meal and fertilise your crops. Two applications usually mature your wheat completely. If your wheat isn't fully ripe, you may need to be patient.
It is ready when it is gold:
You will receive the wheat product, which can be used to feed cows or sheep and also more seeds after you harvest your wheat. You'll be able grow a larger farm next time!
Larger fields
One block of water can provide irrigation to 80 blocks of farmland:
TIP:place an lily pad over the water to stop you from falling into the water when you harvest or replant your wheat.
TIP: You can harvest wheat quicker by pouring water onto your field. Re-planting still has to be done block by block but it is a lot easier.
Melons and pumpkins
Melons can be used to create potions and are a great food source. Although pumpkins aren't edible, they can be used as helmets to protect against Endermen. You can also make Jack'o'Lanterns from pumpkins. This light fixture with a decorative design is used to create snow golems.
Seeds
The seeds of pumpkin and melon are both found in chests in mine shafts, dungeons, and abandoned mines. Sometimes, pumpkins can be found in the wild, while melon seeds could be available from NPC villager.
You can make pumpkin and melon seeds from melon slices or pumpkins.
Planting
Seeds should be planted on
Farmland
The best way to do this is to keep them and preferably irrigated. The plants will turn into a pumpkin or melons plant between 10 and 30 minutes. Once the plant is mature, a pumpkin or melon will appear on the farmland, dirt or grass block in front of the plant.
Accelerate the growth of plants by applying bonemeal. The seeds must be planted on farmland. However the fruit can be grown on dirt, grass, or farmland. After harvesting the plant will grow another fruit every 1-30 minutes. - the plant can only have one fruit at a time. Axes are the best tool to harvest pumpkins, however, any tool will work for melons.
Farm Layouts
There are many ways to design farms. Here are two of them:
Lily Pads
To stop melon slices falling in your farm's water, place lily pads over the top.
Carrots and Potatoes
Potatoes and carrots are often dropped by zombies. They are also found in NPC villages.
They are similar to cultivating wheat except that there aren't seeds. Place potatoes and carrots in the fields. If you can, keep them hydrated. It is best to wait. Bonemeal can accelerate the process. When you harvest your crops, you will be able to reap more than you originally planned to plant.
Potatoes and carrots can both be eaten raw, but it is better to bake potatoes in a furnace before cooking them.
Beetroot
Another crop that can be located in the villages is beetroot. When you harvest beetroot you will be able to harvest Beetroot and Beetroot Seeds which can be planted.
Beetroot can be eaten raw or used to make Beetroot Soup. You can also make Rose Red dye from it.
Cocoa Beans
Cocoa beans can be found in dungeon boxes or on trees in the forest. You can harvest them by planting the beans on the side of a Jungle Wood log (either make use of live trees or a piece of wood from the tree and place it wherever you'd like. They will develop through a variety of stages and are harvested once they have reached ripeness.
Nether Wart
Nether Wart is only found in Nether Fortresses, but once you've found it, you can grow it anyplace. It can be planted in Soul Sand and harvested when it's fully developed.
It doesn't require any light, but it can't be accelerated by bone meal. You can only grow it in soulsand, not regular dirt.
