Focal seizures during sleep are classified into three groups: atypical absences, tonic axial seizures, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Atypical absences are most likely to affect children. However, they can happen at any age.
Focal seizures during sleep are often associated with amnestic automatisms. They are associated with a high rate of risk of future seizures. Consequently, they require prompt antiseizure medication therapy.
Atypical absences may be accompanied by brief tonic seizures or myoclonic attacks. Symptoms can last for a few minutes, or for several minutes or hours.
