Attack on Titan is a dark fantasy anime that has taken the world by storm. The show is set in a post-apoclyptic future where humanity lives in cities surrounded by enormous walls to protect them from the gigantic man-eating giants known as Titans. The series follows Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman and their friend Armin Arlert whose lives are forever changed when a Colossus Titan destroys their home town and kills their mother. The story is praised for its unique setting, well-developed characters and epic action sequences. The animation is also top-notch and helps to create a sense of suspense and dread throughout the show.
The success of the series has led to a variety of spin-off manga and light novels. The main spin-off is Attack on Titan: Junior High, a comedy manga that follows the characters as they battle Titans in junior high. The series was written by Saki Nakagawa and started serialization in the May 2012 issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. There is also Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, a manga adaptation of a light novel series that is set in the world of the main manga and chronicles events prior to the formation of the outermost wall.
There is also a third spin-off called the Garrison Regiment which focuses on soldiers who guard the walls and civilians in the inner city. Another popular manga is the short 4-koma series Spoof on Titan which is a comedic take on the main characters and was created by Gun Snark and Hikaru Suruga. The manga has also inspired a variety of video games and a two-part live-action film adaptation.
