Microsoft is Building a Netflix-style Streaming Service for Xbox Games

Microsoft is building a Netflix-style streaming service for video games. It promises to bring 'console-quality gaming to any device'.

Redmond-based company claims that players will be able stream blockbuster films to their Xbox laptop, computer or smartphone.

It is unclear if users will be required to pay for each game or whether they will be able to access the entire library for a monthly fee, such as video on-demand.

Microsoft does not believe streaming will replace dedicated home consoles, with the company also teasing that new Xbox hardware is already in development.

Microsoft is working on a Netflix-style streaming service for video games that will provide 'console-quality gaming on any device'. In its E3 presentation, Microsoft also announced 50 new games for fans - an unprecedented feat for the company based in Redmond.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer also teased the forthcoming video game streaming service, which he claims will be able to 'unlock console-quality gaming for any device'

Executive President of Gaming Phil Spencer revealed Microsoft's plans to launch an online service during its press conference at video game exhibition E3 in Los Angeles.

Spencer said: 'Our cloud engineers are working on an online gaming network that will unlock console-quality gaming on any device.

'We are dedicated to perfecting your experience everywhere you want to play - on your Xbox PC, your Xbox, and your smartphone.'

This method, also known as Cloud Gaming, allows players to access an extensive collection of games without having to download or install each individual game.

Cloud gaming can enable console-quality video games to run on much smaller devices, such as smartphones, since all of the heavy-lifting is handled on a server, not by the device used by the user.

This is very different than traditional video console games which must process all data on the disk locally and thus require high-end chipsets.

Xbox boss Spencer hasn't revealed a launch date for the service during his presentation, but Spencer has teased previously that Microsoft's game streaming might be launched in 2020.

The company isn't the only one with an interest in streaming games. Rival PlayStation also offers the option of streaming games to your devices.

It's dubbed PlayStation Now, the subscription service costs PS12.99 ($20) per month and allows players to stream more than 500 titles to their Sony PS4 or Windows PC.

After it bought rival services Gaikai, OnLive, and Sony, Sony launched its cloud gaming platform.

However, despite its emphasis on streaming video games, Microsoft has not abandoned its hardware plans.

It is not clear if users will be required to pay for individual titles or the possibility of being able to access the entire library at a monthly fee, much like Netflix.

Microsoft has announced plans to build Xbox hardware, with new consoles in the works despite teasers of streaming services.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer remained tight-lipped on any specifics about the forthcoming console, however, the executive did reveal that backwards-compatibility with older video games would play significant role for the new hardware

Phil Spencer used the E3 keynote to tease the follow-up to the Xbox One, with hints that Microsoft could have multiple new consoles in the pipeline.

He stated that the same team that produced unparalleled performance with Xbox One X was deep in the process of designing the next Xbox consoles. This will allow them to once again keep their promise to console gaming.

Spencer remained tight-lipped on any specifics about the console, however, the executive did reveal that backwards-compatibility with Xbox One games would play significant role for the new hardware.

He told Eurogamer: "As you think about this next generation of hardware that eventually will be released, a lot of the massive, huge games that people play today will continue to exist when the next hardware comes out.

There isn't a "2" at the end of all these games, as they are trying to get you to the next version. In the older model of games being shipped - getting played and then moving away the console switch was a simple function to perform.

'We went through it with Minecraft. We didn't release Minecraft 2 on Xbox One to try to compel everybody to move to the next console because that's not what Minecraft gamers want. They simply want Minecraft to get better.

When you think about games like PUBG and Fortnite and think about these massive games and ecosystems that'll be out there, when new hardware arrives, people will continue to want to play these games and it's going be important for us as platforms to support them.'

Microsoft has revealed Halo Infinite, a new installment in the popular Halo series. It will only be available on Xbox-branded consoles

Microsoft also showcased an unprecedented number of new games for its fans during its E3 presentation.

The company took the wraps off of a selection of exclusive titles, including brand new entries in its Halo and Gears of War series.

Spencer identified the list of new games as the most diverse gaming portfolio ever'.
