Native Americans in the Northwest region got most of their food from fishing. Male tribe members would use bows, arrows, spears, and fishhooks to catch their food. Some of the common animals they ate were seals, salmon, sea otters, and whales. They ate plants and fruits that were from the forest. The Arctic Native americans ate Some land animals that were hunted - caribou, musk oxen, arctic fox, polar bear, arctic hare, arctic birds. Many Arctic Indians hunted whale and sea lions using open boats and were prolific fishermen. Due to the difficulties caused by the bitterly cold climate they usually confined their fishing to the summer. The fish was dried and smoked in smoke houses for their winter food. Cooked fish in wooden pot over a fire. Unable to farm because of the harsh weather of the frozen tundra. Ate wild berries. A high percentage of their food was fatty, which gave them energy in the cold weather. They mostly lived off of meat from hunting animals. They used harpoons to hunt seals, walruses, and the bowhead whale.
