Does Minecraft come with a win-condition?
No.
I'm talking about a win. conditon ends the game. It is something you strive for. It is imposed from without.
It also serves a purpose by providing a framework within which we can (I insist on stating that we will) create our own winning conditions. My boss was building a temple that had an entrance shaped like an enormous cock. He did not have to do it, and nothing occurred after it was completed. All that fun stuff that took place.
If you believe that games must to have a win-condition, then you could claim that Minecraft is just a frame that allows for a win condition. But that seems such a mincing theoretical cop out in the context of a myriad of things that create fun in the same way. Like Electroplankton. These things can be called games. These things feel like games when they're played regardless of our participation. We don't discount the value of games with audience interaction, just because they're not finished until they're completed.
I've also argued with vigor (and while drinking) that Minecraft has an excellent story. It builds it generatively, and you are a part of it, but that doesn't argue against the skillful craftsmanship that was used to design it by Notch. This is a step above.
Doug has written about the deeper connection to the self-deprecating games created by the Copenhagen team. But I'm two pints too far to get that information in the moment. On keyboards that are screen-based, it's all suck.
