As we've already mentioned, Minecraft with RTX's worlds are almost entirely traced on a path, with lighting and effects featuring incredible levels of detail to give the best image quality that is possible. Here's a complete list of the main effects, in case you are curious or just need to know more about the technology behind Minecraft and the RTX engine.
Global Illumination
Games are traditionally illuminated by pre-computed lightmaps, Image-Based Lighting Probes, Spherical Harmonics, and Reflective Shadow Maps, plus artist-placed lights to force illumination in areas where the aforementioned techniques fail. Although the results look amazing but the methods employed have a few flaws, the most notable of which is that dynamic lighting is unable to bounce or illuminate beyond the area that the light is hitting.
For instance, imagine a dark room with bright light shining through windows. Traditional techniques illuminate everything that is directly illuminated by light. xwcb However the areas that are illuminated do not reflect light and therefore do not illuminate the surrounding game elements.
Path tracing is a method to accurately model the dynamic indirect light reflected off of surfaces in the scene. We can also have it interact with other effects that use ray-traced. Imagine the sun shining into a castle via stained glass windows that are multicolored, refracting, illuminating every corner of the room, reflecting off the shiny marble floor, and increasing the surrounding details, causing new shadows that harden contact to be cast off objects.
