All Zoomed Out? Zoom fatigue during the holiday season: How do you combat it?

--

Author: Jaigris Hodson, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Royal Roads University

Article content It's official. In North America and most of Western Europe, the Christmas holidays will be quite different this year. We've been told to use online tools to share the holiday spirit with loved ones following the second pandemic wave. In fact, we may all find ourselves declining to participate in in-person celebrations to try to stop the spread of COVID-19 prior to the release of the vaccine.

Content of the article Unfortunately, however we've been doing almost everything digitally from our homes for months, and the majority of us are getting bored of the whole process and with good reason.

Do we just forget about the holidays? Or do we look for new ways to make it memorable? My research into digital literacy has revealed ways we can connect this Christmas season, even when we are physically separated.

Video is the answer to everything

The first few months of the pandemic were full of Zoom fever. People were also speeding to work, happy hour and board game nights, along with other activities. Many felt as if they had hit a brick wall. Zoom fatigue is real. Recent research suggests that the constant efforts to connect with video chat platforms (Zoom, Skype, Teams and similar) may actually be wearing us down.

Article content While you think about ways to spread holiday cheer, you want to figure out ways to move away from everything being done through video chat. Instead, learn from the ways that digital natives utilize digital communication tools, and celebrate the season with various platforms, as I'll explain below.

Different platforms for different social groups

My research has revealed that teenagers are less likely to use social media platforms in a way that is based on the relationships they have with those platforms. For example, teenagers use Facebook to stay in touch with their families and teachers, but use Snapchat with their friends. They socialize in massive multiplayer games.

This type of interaction using digital technology is a good idea for all. Zoom is a fantastic tool to work with. However, Zoom users may also be interested in exploring other ways to connect with their loved ones and family. You can use apps like Rave, Airtime, or Teleparty to share your favorite movies synchronously with your friends. Or you could visit your family and friends online in a game like Animal Crossing, World of Warcraft or Minecraft.

Article content Be digitally creative

There are numerous ways to connect with your loved ones and spread holiday cheer. The sky, and your creativity is the limit Here are some of my favorites:

Create and share a music playlist A study on online music sharing has proven that sharing music is connected to friendship. You can create a holiday music playlist and share it with others on streaming platforms like Spotify. This could help you connect with your friends when you order food online, play games and send holiday memes to your WhatsApp Group.

Text messages can be sent A study conducted in 2016 by the University of Minnesota showed that text message are perceived as being more warm and personal than emails. Stay in contact with your loved ones all through the holidays by texting frequently. Sending gifs and emojis in your text messages will improve the emotional bond you have with your loved ones.

Article content Host a virtual new Year's Eve celebration on YouTube A Christmas party is a Scottish holiday tradition that sees families and friends get together and discuss stories, songs and dancing. You can create a virtual ceilidh with those you love by using a website like YouTube. Each participant can upload a video of themselves singing an anthem, telling a story, singing a poem, or playing a musical instrument. Then , you can organize the videos into a playlist that the group can enjoy while eating their Christmas cookies. YouTube is a platform where communities form and videos are shared.

Turn on the radio, tune in, then cop out

Holidays can be stressful. 53vv.Com You might be attracted by every invitation. But, you have to take a moment to disconnect from your digital devices. For those who suffer from Zoom fatigue certain universities recommend that doctoral students incorporate digital detox time in their schedules.

Article content Sometimes you'll really need videoconferencing to recreate a holiday dinner or cocktail party, so be sure you combat Zoom fatigue by balancing your video chatting with other ways to connect described above.

While you are away from your computer, don't forget old-fashioned ways to stay in contact. You can send cards, call or mail your loved ones. Sometimes these are most impactful because they are something we encounter seldom in our increasingly connected world.
