Film premieres Independence Film: films from Cannes 2023 - Jeanne du Barry, Club Zero, The Old Oak

Jeanne du Barry, the film directed by Maïwenn, who stars alongside Johnny Depp, opens the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27) and arrives in cinemas in Romania this fall, distributed by Independence Movie.

The sixth feature film by the 46-year-old French actress and director Maiwenn (known for "Polisse", awarded the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2011), tells the story of "the life, rise and fall of King Louis XV's favorite lea", performed by Maïwenn herself, while Johnny Depp plays the role of the French sovereign.

Independenta Film , the distribution company that has been active since 1997 in Romania and which promotes reference independent films, niche ones or winners of prestigious international awards, brings from the Cannes selection, in addition to the opening film, three other titles that will have their premiere in theaters this fall after premiering at Les Films de Cannes: Club Zero (dir. Jessica Hausner ), starring Mia Wasikowska as a teacher at an elite school who forms a close relationship, but extremely dangerous with five of his students; The Old Oak, about which director Ken Loachhe specified that it is the last one he is making and which tells the story of Syrian refugees who arrive in a depopulated mining town; Il sol dell'avvenire, the new film by Nanni Moretti , a comedy that makes you laugh with tears, about love and abandonment, in which the established director, 50 years after his first feature film, presents himself, with the obsessions and the passions of his past as a filmmaker.

Johnny Depp poked fun at Hollywood at the Cannes Film Festival

Controversial American actor Johnny Depp was present at Cannes for his new film "Jeanne du Barry", where he plays the role of Louis XV.

And once they started, I didn't follow them. I said to myself, “I wasn't there. I can't judge". And I say this, even though I know I feel like I'm setting myself on fire, but I had to keep my professional desire for him, being the director of the film. This may seem shocking to some, but it was very important to me not to act as a prosecutor. And today, unfortunately, with social media, everyone has become a prosecutor for every event that happens in the world," explained Maïwenn.

He replied firmly, but tried to suggest that he wasn't too bothered by it.

“Did I feel boycotted by Hollywood? You should have no pulse to tell yourself "No, none of this is happening". It's a weird joke. When you're asked to drop a movie because of something that's just a function of the vowels and consonants floating in the air, yes, you feel boycotted.

Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro reunited at Cannes for the movie "Killers of The Flower Moon"

Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro presented at Cannes the first feature film they have made together in the last half century.

"We haven't been here together since 1976," said De Niro, recalling the Palme d'Or premiere of Taxi Driver, the second of the pair's ten collaborations.

They discussed the importance of sensitively telling the story of a series of murders that terrorized the Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma in the mid-1920s. These murders were motivated by the desire for the new wealth created by oil found on the Osage reservation to end up in the hands of the white conquerors, writes theguardian.com.

Scorsese was so marked by his encounters with Native Americans that he changed the original script of the film and decided to tell the story of the murders from the perspective of the victims.

“I was so affected and impressed! I know what their values are and they really understand how to live on this planet. They reoriented me every time they talked to them," he said.

Also appearing at the press conference was the leader of the Osage community, Chief Standing Bear, who said his people are still suffering today.

Scorsese's 26th feature film, which runs nearly 4 hours, is adapted from David Grann's non-fiction book of the same name.

Actress Elvira Deatcu about the role of Elena Ceaușescu: "It was extremely frightening"

Actress Elvira Deatcu will play the role of Elena Ceaușescu in the spy series Spy/Master, inspired by the life of the former head of the communist security, Mihai Pacepa.

In the role of the general, we will see the actor Claudiu Bleonț.

Elvira Deatcu says, however, that it was difficult to interpret the wife of the former communist dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu.

It was very difficult for me, but the director believed very strongly in me and Claudiu. I discussed the characters with him. Unfortunately, rehearsals could not be done. Everything was fast forward, filming started in Hungary and the director had to leave.

I didn't get a rehearsal time, but we talked and understood what it was all about. Then, we started to document ourselves, as we found sources. There are quite a few sources," the actress reveals to Playtech .

Moreover, she states that the character of Elena Ceaușescu seemed frightening to her.

I kept thinking that the character should not send negative energy to me. I am trying to draw Elena Ceaușescu, because it was a real test", concludes the artist.

The production will premiere on May 19, 2023 on HBO MAX.

Metronome at the opening of Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest. Country in focus at the 13th edition, Sweden

They are all related to the famous "Swedish film school". An ideal opportunity to offer Romanian moviegoers an unmissable Focus Sweden at Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest .13.

Cult Swedish director Ruben Östlund, winner of a Palme d'Or in 2017 for The Square , returned to Cannes this year with Triangle of Sadness , with which he managed to claim the ultimate trophy again. This fresh sarcastic masterpiece was joined by two other films by rising filmmakers of immigrant origin that the public can see at this edition: Boy from Heaven , by Swede Tarik Saleh – Best Screenplay Award, Cannes 2022 , and Holy Spider , by Danish-Iranian Ali Abbasi – Best Actress Award, Cannes 2022 for Zar Amir Ebrahimi.

Nordic directors " often push the boundaries of cinematic language , " says Claus Christensen, editor of the Danish film magazine Ekko.

Abbasi, born in Iran 40 years ago, educated in Sweden and settled in Denmark, is making his second appearance at Cannes, having won the Un Certain Regard section in 2018 for debutants with Border, an eccentric film with fantastic undertones , about a border policeman. His new film, Holy Spider , is the gritty story of a serial killer who "cleanses" the Iranian holy city of Mashhad of street prostitutes. " You can't categorize it. When you think you've got him in a definition, he changes shape and becomes something else , " his producer Jacob Jarek told Agence France-Presse. Ali Abbasi's Holy Spider ingeniously manages to bridge the gap between social realism and consumer cinema in a way that suggests both are rooted in a similar realm of gritty authenticity. This versatility defines his generation, says Jarek.

Mourning in the world of film. A famous Oscar-winning actress has died

Louise Fletcher, the Oscar-winning actress who played Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, has died at the age of 88.

The actress' agent said she died at her home in France, Sky News writes.

The daughter of hard-of-hearing parents, the Alabama native was taught to speak by her aunt and showed an interest in acting from an early age. She made her professional acting debut in 1958, but only became famous in Hollywood when she accepted the role of Nurse Ratched - she was 40 and had just returned to acting after an 11-year hiatus while raising her two children.

Director Milos Fletcher cast her after many major stars - including Angela Lansbury and Ellen Burstyn - turned down the role.

He gave one of the most emotional acceptance speeches at the Oscars when he became the first person to use sign language, taking the moment to address his parents directly on stage.

Before her Oscar success, Fletcher's career was often hampered by her height. At 1.70 m, she was immediately rejected from an audition because she was taller than the lead actor.

But after "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" he would work steadily for the rest of his life.

"A total work of art!" Somewhere in Palilula, rave reviews in France

The film Somewhere in Palilula written and directed by Silviu Purcărete was released on the big screens in France in September 2022, 10 years after it was selected in the East is West Competition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. French audiences and critics have enthusiastically received the production, which can be seen in cinemas across the country. Palilula is a place where the ridiculous coexists with charming things, and the population of the city is isolated for eternity in drunkenness, parties and orgies. The cast includes Áron Dimény, George Mihăiță, Răzvan Vasilescu or Constantin Chiriac.

For Positif , the publication of the Lumière Institute, the film is "a total work of art that ingeniously unites theatre, opera and history", and for Premiere magazine it is "a baroque, powerful, deafening story". À voir à lirehe sees in Silviu Purcărete's film "a tribute in the form of a fairy tale, populated by reminiscences, to a country that knew how to use laughter and the dreamlike to transcend the madness of its own history. Light, color, make-up, decoration help to create a fascinating and disconcerting universe. We have the impression that we are witnessing the melancholic and joyful revelations of a poet of modern times, and this is because the entire film is permeated with poetry and symbols. The world of Palilula, with all its creatures, is doomed to an extravagant party that will never end to haunt the viewer's imagination."

Chacun Cherche Son Film , "Somewhere at Palilula proposes an infinite game of theater within theater, offering everyone the spectacle of a strange microcosm, where the inhabitants must come to terms with the extravagances and manipulations of power." Le Bleu du Miroir notes the film's music: “Accompanied by a special soundtrack, this original and visually successful film, sprinkled with crazy, funny or disturbing moments, takes us on an unusual journey, sometimes hilarious and sometimes destabilizing. Between laughter and discomfort, it's hard to remain indifferent to this unclassifiable and mysterious film."

Alexander Sokurov's latest film Fairytale at the opening of the 12th BIEFF

On Monday, September 26, in anticipation of the official debut of the festival, the film will have a first meeting with the public in Romania, from 18:30, at Cinemateca Eforie.

Among the surprises prepared for the audience at this year's edition are also two special programs of short films, presented in partnership with the Berlinale Forum Expanded section, Arsenal Berlin - Institute for Film and Video Art and the National Film Archive.

Fairy tale, fable, parable – all these apply to the last film in the tetralogy about dictators of the 20th century, signed by director Alexander Sokurov. A transcendent metaphor, where the aesthetic is equally political, Fairytale condemns violence, war, dictatorship, imperialism and idolatry in a way that is sorely needed at this moment in history. In the film that enjoyed an international premiere in the Official Locarno Competition, the author uses CGI, artificial intelligence and deep fake technology to take us to the darkest corners of Purgatory, where Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill, split into countless guises and courts, suspended, denied salvation.

The film will be able to be watched for the first time on the big screen in Romania, on September 26, from 18:30, at Cinemateca Eforie, in the preview of the 12th edition of BIEFF.

Another perspective on the past, one focused on the history of Romanian experimental cinema, is the subject of the Speculative Ecologies program, presented at BIEFF in partnership with the National Film Archive. Through this approach, the festival continues to probe the process that avant-garde art has undergone in our country throughout its history, promoting the innovative ways in which Romanian artists have chosen to express their visions of the world, sometimes even despite the danger of to become victims of censorship.

The selection, which will bring back to the big screen works produced between 1977 and 2012, took shape around a specific theme: ecology.

Masters of journalistic dialogue, hosts in the new season "Beyond black and white"

We have already become accustomed, at "Beyond black and white", to spectacular dialogues and special guests, people of reference in their fields. This fall, with the start of season 2 of the program, the filmmakers propose a change that brings more consistency.

The show's team assures us that the topics will be from the most diverse areas - culture, social, health, environment, economy, diaspora. And special guests are coming to the set this autumn, people from whom we can learn, too little publicized. And the eight moderators bring, in turn, the experience accumulated in so many years in the press, the personal way of asking questions and the special way in which each of them knows how to value their invitations. In other words, the show's formula expands, maintaining the standards of journalistic quality, and the effort to offer viewers consistent, frothy and interesting dialogues continues this season as well.

At "Beyond white and black" things are not discussed at extremes, only in black or white, but we try to capture the nuances and explain the phenomena, directions, events, according to everyone's understanding. We always hear and read statements like "the hierarchies have reversed" or "we have no values". We come to tell you that we have values, we have special people and we try to make them known through this show and the journalists who make it. It is not an easy task, but it is the purpose of public television to do this, and we are convinced that the public will appreciate both the diversity of the topics addressed and the quality of the guests",
