Could a smart dresser help dementia patients?
There are several ways in which your home can be adapted to make it more useful for people with dementia, and this will also make life for their carers and families a little easier. The best way to approach any home design change for a person with dementia is to take it slow and do things in the order of importance. This includes removing unnecessary patterns and surfaces to create a more relaxing atmosphere, as well as draughtproofing windows to help keep heat inside the home and using efficient heating to prevent cold spots.
Mirrors are another hazard for a person with dementia, so consider installing decorative chair rails in hallways at elbow level and remove the big wall mirrors to reduce reflections on the eyes. In addition, non-glare or flat-finish wall paints are better for people with dementia than glossy or satin.
Music can also have a calming effect for people with dementia, so use smart speakers or sound systems that play Frank Sinatra or Elvis songs that not only calm agitation but also soothe the senses and promote a good night’s sleep.
Wandering Alarms Adapting your home to the needs of someone with dementia can be a long process, but it’s well worth the effort. This could include removing items that are difficult to move, or introducing equipment designed specifically for people with dementia.
