A Family Minecraft Policy

A family Minecraft policy

April 13 15th, 2015

Minecraft has become a global phenomenon because kids love playing it and parents and teachers praise the way it fuels creativity and learning. We've resisted introducing Minecraft to our family because of the tension and obsessive behavior it can create in many families.

After a lot of conversation and thought, we're ready to let our children play Minecraft. We first asked them five questions about our Minecraft obsession, and then came up with an official family policy based on their responses. Here's the policy that both of our kids had to agree to prior to obtaining Minecraft accounts.

Our Family Minecraft Policy

Principles

1. Getting Minecraft is an EXPERIMENT. 2. Minecraft is a PRIVILEGE and not a right. 3. For safety reasons, Mum and Dad need to know what you are doing on Minecraft and we will set limits on the time and duration you play. 4. We recommend that you make use of Minecraft for CREATE, BUILD LEARN CODE, CREATE and BUILD LEARN. 5. We will regularly discuss and analyze the impact of Minecraft on our families and on your personal development and learning. We would love to hear your opinions on how Minecraft is rewarding for you, and we'd like you to listen to any concerns we may have, and then come up with solutions that address them.

Rules

1. Minecraft can be played during game time. This means that you are able to play Minecraft during game time.

2. Each child will have their own username, which they will be able to help choose. Each child will be assigned a password for Minecraft selected by mom and dad. We will create your password for you. However, you will not be able to access your password; that allows us to manage your usage. 3. You are only allowed to play in Creative mode or Survival mode. If Survival mode causes problems during game times we will allow you to play in Creative mode. 4. Only servers you've signed up for are permitted to play. 5. Do not steal from family members or friends chests. 6. There is no way to kill siblings or friends in Minecraft (or anywhere else). 7. You aren't able to trap unless are in a world specifically designed for trapping. You must have a plan to deal with any trapping incident that may occur in the event that you accidentally get caught or killed. 8. You cannot download modsor maps textures packs, mods, or any other files. RYO MAIL You'll have to seek assistance in downloading files to your computer if you wish to download mods, maps, texture packs or any other. 9. You can EARN mods and maps, texture packs and other add-ons, by showing us what you've created and built, learned about, or written yourself. The more we can see you creating, the more we will be willing to expand Minecraft for you. This applies to free downloads as well as paid mods/maps/expansions. 10. If we request you to show us your Minecraft screen at any given moment, you will display it. 11. It is your obligation to save your progress, game or creations before the game ends. You will lose your progress if do not save. 12. It is your responsibility to ensure a smooth transition from Minecraft at the end of your game without yelling, whining or requesting more time. Before you play you must think about how you will move from Minecraft into your next activity. Tell us your plan before you begin playing. That plan might include taking three deep breaths before going for a walk around the block - taking out your book of choice, and having it ready for you - Asking us to arrange a game on the board we can play when you are done playing Minecraft

13. Infractions to this policy could cause Minecraft privileges being revoked for up to a week. Violations include, but aren't restricted to: - Asking for an extra hour - requesting to play before the game time – Tantrums when Minecraft is over changing or sneaking into Minecraft downloading filesYou can hide your screen, or delay giving it to us when we ask -

14. If we continue to have issues with Minecraft we will uninstall Minecraft from all of our devices and we will not have Minecraft in our home for at least three months. This policy will be applicable to BOTH kids even if just one of you has difficulty managing Minecraft.

* These rules were adapted by Caryn Talty's Minecraft rules on Health-Family.org. Rule #6 is taken verbatim.
