Oil spills can have a devastating influence on the surroundings and cost a lot of money to clean up and resolve. Look for damage and possible leaking issues
There are a variety of things that you should check on a regular basis to ensure your heating oil tank or pipes aren't damaged and causing leaks.
Inspect the tank for rusting, corrosion or physical damage - Visually inspect your tank for just about any clear signs of damage that could result in weakened areas and possible leakages. Internal rusting or corrosion can simply create a leak as these areas are weaker than the remaining tank and could leak due to the pressure.
Look at the tank stand - Heating oil tanks could be incredibly heavy. A fuel tank with a 1,135 litre capacity can weigh around a tonne, which means that the stand is put under enormous pressure. It is critical to check to be sure the stand is still structurally sound and has no signs of giving way.
Check your drip leg - Some heating oil tanks have a drip leg on the pipe leading away from the storage tank which collects water from the machine and stores it so that it could be easily removed. oil tank replacement can freeze in winter and rupture the pipe, causing a leak. Check for rupturing with this pipe and make sure the valve is fully shut in order to avoid any oil spillage.
Take a look at the piping - Although your tank might be in good condition, your piping may not be. Pipes can easily rupture and shift around if they're not supported properly. Check all along the piping to ensure the piping hasn't come from its support.
