According to UNHCR, the war in Ukraine sparked the fastest-growing refugee crisis since WWII. Almost 6 million (as of May 10, 2022) people have fled. The UNCHR’s Refugee Brief, which compiles the week’s biggest refugee stories, has recently described situations in places like Somalia, where thousands of people were displaced due to severe drought. Between January and mid-April, more than 36,000 refugees from Nigeria, Mali, and Burkina Faso arrived in Niger. These are only a few examples of the refugee crises, which endangers already marginalized groups – like women and children – and puts them at an increased risk of trafficking, violence, and death.
Many people are aware of the world’s refugee crises through the news and social media. However, not many people have a deep understanding of human displacement, it’s impact of both refugees and host communities, what assistance is needed and how they can help.
For better community integration. It is vital that more people understand human displacement, how it affects people and how countries assist refugees. This is especially true as refugees are hosted in almost every society and people are actually likely to come into contact with refugees often. Having an understanding of the refugee experience is important
It’s important to learn about refugees because millions of people are displaced around the world. Refugee numbers are also increasing as wars, disasters and climate change impact people. It’s also important people learn about the positives affects refugees can have on host communities.
