¿Qué es el Colesterol VLDL?
VLDL cholesterol is part of a group of particles called lipoproteins. They transport fats, including triglycerides and cholesterol, throughout your body.

These fats can build up in your arteries. This is known as atherosclerosis, and it increases your risk of heart disease or stroke. VLDL cholesterol levels are often measured along with LDL, HDL and total cholesterol in a lipid panel blood test.

What is VLDL? VLDL is a type of lipoprotein particle that your liver makes and secretes into the bloodstream. It carries triglycerides, another type of fat, to tissues throughout your body. Like chylomicrons, VLDL contains cholesterol, fatty acids and a protein called apolipoprotein B (apoB). High levels of VLDL can contribute to the buildup of a fatty substance in your arteries that hardens over time. This is known as atherosclerosis and can limit the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your body's cells.

Your doctor may measure your VLDL levels along with other types of cholesterol and triglycerides in a broader test called a lipid panel or coronary risk profile. Your doctor will explain what the results mean for your health. You will have a needle inserted into your arm or hand to draw the blood sample. You might feel a slight pain or sting when this happens. Your doctor will consider your age, sex, family history, lifestyle habits like smoking, and other health conditions when interpreting the results.

What is the test for VLDL? Although there is no direct test for VLDL cholesterol, it can be estimated based on the level of triglycerides in your blood. A health professional will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The procedure is quick and easy, with little risk. You may feel a slight pain or sting when the needle is inserted. You may also have some bruising where the blood was drawn.

Triglycerides are made in your liver and transported to your tissues by a type of fat particle called chylomicrons. High levels of triglycerides in the blood are associated with heart disease.

Elevated levels of both triglycerides and VLDL cholesterol increase your risk of atherosclerosis, a buildup of fatty deposits that can narrow or block the arteries and lead to heart disease, stroke, and other problems. This is why it is important to get regular tests for your cholesterol and triglycerides. A routine test can help your doctor recommend lifestyle changes or medication to decrease your risks.

How is the test done? The VLDL cholesterol test can be done in a medical clinic or hospital. It is usually conducted as part of a lipid profile test to check the total cholesterol levels of a person. High levels of cholesterol can lead to the build-up of plaque in the arteries, which can increase your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Cholesterol is carried through your blood by fat and protein particles called lipoproteins. These carry triglycerides and cholesterol around the body in a process called lipoprotein transport.

VLDLs are a group of fat-containing lipoproteins that carry triglycerides and cholesterol to parts of the body that need them. These particles also contain a type of protein called apolipoprotein B (apoB). High apoB levels are linked with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Most at-home cholesterol tests only measure your total cholesterol, including HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. These tests can also be performed by a health professional or lab phlebotomist at an outpatient laboratory or a diagnostic clinic.

What is the result of the test? Your doctor will be able to tell you the level of cholesterol in your blood. Your results will be in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). A normal level is less than 40 mg/dL.

Your body needs both cholesterol and triglycerides to work. But these fats cannot travel alone in the blood. Instead, they need lipoproteins, which are small particles that carry them to tissues throughout the body. The liver creates VLDL and other types of lipoproteins. It also removes triacylglycerol from the end of VLDL to make LDL, or "bad" cholesterol.

VLDL levels are not usually measured directly. Instead, most labs estimate your VLDL levels based on the triglyceride level in the blood. The triglyceride test is done by drawing a blood sample from a vein in your arm. You will need to fast before this test. You should not eat or drink anything but water for 12 hours before the test. This may cause mild to moderate pain or bruising.
