Xbox, Sony Hackers Hit by Hack Attack

Hack attack on Sony and Xbox

20 January 2015

Lizard Squad hacking group was attacked in a scandalous attack that exposed its entire database of users.

The group claimed to have knocked down the Xbox and PlayStation gaming networks offline around Christmas.

It then launched a website that permitted anyone who paid for its software to flood other sites with data.

The attack that exposed the customer list is one of several aimed at the group and its tools.

Brian Krebs, an investigative journalist, broke the story about the compromise of the Lizard Stresser database. The Stresser let users who paid make use of it to overload websites or shut down users by bombarding websites they were visiting with data.

Krebs did not name the person who obtained the data, but he did say that he'd a copy of the entire roster, which included 14,241 people who signed-up.

Anyone visiting the Stresser site was warned about the attack by text on the login page's main page that urged users to change the password they had created when they registered.

Krebs stated in a blog entry that the Lizard Squad had not taken enough measures to protect the login information and contact details given by users.

Krebs stated that the usernames and passwords of all registered users were stored plain text, adding that only 100 people had paid for it.

Tech news site Ars Technica also got hold of the database dump that was posted for a brief time on the Mega file-sharing service. It stated that the majority of those who utilized it were gamers who wanted to stop rivals playing a particular game. Minecraft servers were a favorite target of the Stresser users, it said.

Ars Technica said the dump of the database could cause problems for anyone who had used it because the IP addresses of a lot of them were obscured and could, with a bit of effort, be recovered.

Then, shortly after Lizard Squad was attacked on IRC chat networks other computer experts deconstructed the tools. One of the hackers revealed the source code of the program used to attack IRC chat network users.

Additionally, shortly after the Stresser website was launched, computer science student Eric Zhang managed to enumerate the names of all people who had signed up using a very simple script.

He stated, "That took only 10 minutes."

He also said that he was not surprised that the entire database was stolen, as he scanned the site and noticed that the public access to the server behind it was still accessible.

"If you examine the site it's clearly run by a person who doesn't have any formal knowledge of software engineering," he said.

"Most of what they're doing is not really impressive," he said. "Anyone could accomplish it. ealatorre.com It takes only time.

Mr Krebs stated that Lizard Squad was being targeted by security personnel who were annoyed by their sudden notoriety.

He also said that there was a general feeling in the security community that these people are out of their minds. If we don't get justice for some teenagers from Western countries who are rubbing it into everyone's faces, it's an unsettling situation.

He claimed that the group was able to survive due to the length of time it took for investigations to be conducted and for members to be found. Recent arrests of Lizard Squad members seemed only to have snatched up a few of its gangsters, but let some of the core members remain at large.
