Sex work is a profession like any other and those who provide the services are worthy of respect and autonomy. In this article, we dive into the realities of sex work beyond the stereotypes and examine the true nature of the profession. We speak to experts to expand upon these realities and also look at the history of sex work and how factors like gender and socio-economic status play a role.


History
The practice of selling sex is as old as it can get, and can be found in documents and records dating back to ancient times. Archaeological evidence indicates that sex work was prevalent in various cultures, and was even considered a status symbol in some cases. Throughout prostitution ads , sex workers have been persecuted by governments, and their marginalization has been constantly reinforced by gender norms.


It was only in the 20th century that sex work was finally decriminalized in various countries. In the last few decades, sex work has become more visible, with a reduction in the stigma attached to the profession. However, the fact remains that sex work is still heavily regulated and has a long way to go when it comes to becoming a more level playing field.
