Badai matahari adalah aktivitas tertentu dari matahari yang melepas partikel bernergi tinggi. Badai matahari itu berupa bintik hitam atau sunspot. Di dalam perut matahari terjadi rotasi dan aliran massa atau konveksi yang memengaruhi gaya magnetnya Pada saat aktivitas tinggi, gaya magnet ini bisa terpelintir atau berpusar hingga menembus permukaan matahari sehingga membentuk kaki-kaki atau sering disebut sebagai bintik hitam atau juga sunspot. Beberapa badai matahari juga muncul ketika terjadi ledakan cahaya atau flare. Fenomena ini mengganggu komunikasi radio dan membuat jarum kompas berputar liar di bumi.
Bintik hitam ini bisa berkurang akibat menurunnya aktivitas dinamo matahari atau tekanan radiasi dari reaksi nuklir di pusat matahari.. Salah satu yang terjadi jika berkurangnya suplai energi dari matahari pada bumi yaitu berkurangnya pemanasan lautan yang artinya penguapan air laut yang akan menjadi hujan rendah.
