Minecraft maker unveils a new "hard science-fiction' game
April 2012
The first details of his next project have been revealed by the creator of Minecraft the well-known video game.
Markus "Notch" Persson said the game was slated to be called 0x10c, space-themed, and set in the distant future.
In contrast to Minecraft the players are "likely" to be charged a monthly cost to participate in multiplayer games.
Worst lies
Despite the fact that Minecraft does not have a third-party publisher or marketing campaign, close to five-and-a half million copies have been sold.
Mojang the development of Mr. Persson's company, has managed to build an impressive buzzword appeal by releasing the game early and letting users decide what they want to do with it.
Mr. Persson claimed that he had the same strategy for the 0x10c.
Ancient universe
He explained that the storyline was about a group of humans who were accidentally put into prolonged deep sleep in 1988 and woken up more than 281 trillion years later.
The universe is described by the players as being "on the edge of extinction" and they take part in space battles and looting, trading, and mining of planets.
Mr Persson stated that he intended to make the title conform to the guidelines of "hard science fiction".
"I will endeavor to ensure that the science in the game has some form of plausible theoretical basis in reality," he wrote.
"As few hand-wavey things as possible and the rest thoroughly explained. Please let me know if you are an expert in the field. I've made a mistake.
In-game computers
Minecraft's appeal is built on its ability to alter the environment in which a character lives. However, 0x10c allows players to program an emulated 16 bit computer processor unit that "powers" their spaceship.
Mr. Persson claimed that users would be able to create their own operating systems for the CPU and when enough user-generated software has been created, people could use it "like ordinary computers" to play other games or perform other functions.
He warned, however, that he couldn't stop the spread of viruses. The players will have to take care of it themselves.
Industry watchers anticipate that the news will generate lots of excitement.
"Everybody has been looking for what "Notch" and Mojang would do next as Minecraft was so popular and unique," said Nathan Brown who is the editor of the online Edge, a gaming magazine. Edge.
It changed the way businesses operate by allowing customers to buy in early and be part of the development. However, it's fascinating that this groundbreaking forward-thinking studio is now looking at monthly subscription model - that's something that's been associated with older titles like World of Warcraft."
