Mary Wade Correctional Facility, Lidcombe
Mary Wade was transported to New South Wales at the age of 11 in 1789. She had been found guilty of highway robbery and sentenced to death by hanging at her trial. However, as was often the case in such trials, her death sentence was commuted to transportation to the penal colony of New South Wales for life.

The Mary Wade Correctional Centre was established in 2017 as a maximum security custodial centre for women on remand only. As a standalone centre for this purpose, it is unique in NSW. In 1990, she excavated , in the Hughenden area, the most complete pliosaur known to date. She then turned to problematic mollusc fossils from the inland sea deposits of the Great Artesian Basin, describing the remains of giant squids that inhabited western Queensland 100 million years ago. In 1987, with the help of local people in the Hughenden area, she recovered the second only skull of the Queensland iconic dinosaur Muttaburasaurus.

Her trial was held on 14 January 1789 at the Old Bailey, where she was found guilty and was sentenced to death by hanging. When mary wade died on her birthday in 1859 at the age of 84, she had over 300 living descendants and was considered one of the founding mothers of Australia. Tens of thousands of Australians, including the former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, trace their lineage back to that little convict girl, Mary Wade. She gave birth to another 10 children but only 6 of them survived infancy . Her 7 surviving children lived through better times than Mary and had 54 children of their own. Mary Wade was 13 years old when she was sentenced to hang for highway robbery in Westminster, London. Her death sentence was later commuted to transportation for life and she was instead banished to Australia.
By 1809, Mary had married and set up home near the Hawkesbury River with convict Jonathan Brooker. Emancipated circa 1812, the pair took ownership of a thirty acre farm in Airds, Campbelltown and lived happily until Harrigan’s death in 1833. Twenty six years later in 1859, eighty year old Mary died at home.
