At the time of her death, Mary had over 300 living descendants and is considered as one of the founding mothers of the early settlers to Australia. Today her descendants number in the tens of thousands, including Kevin Rudd, the former Prime Minister of Australia. Mary’s story is told in the book “Mary Wade to Us” published as a family tree, noted in the further reading below. This, and the stories of Mr Rudd’s other convict ancestors has now been collated into two leather-bound volumes by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is kept in the National Library of Australia in Canberra.

Mary lived with Jonathan Brooker near the Hawkesbury River from 1809. It was here that Mary raised her family which numbered 21 children, seven of whom lived to have their own children. Jonathan was given his Certificate of Freedom in February 1811 and then given a grant of 60 acres at Tarrawanna, New South Wales by Governor Macquarie. Mary finally received her Certificate of Freedom on the first of September 1812. In 1816 they settled on the property of Airds in Campbelltown, New South Wales with their family.

Mary the sauropod was named in honour of Dr Mary Wade, a former Curator of Palaeontology at Queensland Museum, now living at Hughenden. In some way or another Dr Wade has been involved in nearly every major dinosaur discovery that has taken place in western Queensland over the last 30 years. Many of the sauropod finds made in the Winton District, including Elliot, would never have come to light if it were not for her efforts. Dr. Wade retired from the museum in 1993 and moved to Western Queensland, assisting in the development of fossil centres in Richmond and Hughenden. She had many friends in the region, and continued to promote new finds of fossil material through theses contacts.

On 1 March 1790 Wade was sent to Norfolk Island on the Sirius. Atkinson returned to Port Jackson when his sentence expired. Wade left Norfolk Island on the Francis on 2 February 1794 and in 1806 was recorded as living with Atkinson with one illegitimate son.

Wade then worked as a Senior Demonstrator at the University, while doing postgraduate studies and completed a Ph.D. in 1959. After completing her studies, she undertook research with Professor Martin Glaessner focused on the earliest forms of animal life, including the Ediacara biota within the Flinders Ranges. We inspected the Mary Wade Correctional Centre, a stand-alone remand facility for women in metropolitan Sydney. The centre accommodates up to 94 women who have been charged with an offence but are unconvicted.
